🤖 AI meets Forest Conservation 🌳 We spoke with Professor Emily Lines and Dr Harry Owen to learn about how they are harnessing Artificial Intelligence and billions of laser-captured data points to revolutionise forest monitoring across Europe. 🌍 Forests are essential to climate mitigation and limiting further global temperature rises - often being described as the 'lungs of the Earth', absorbing twice as much carbon as they emit. AI and drones are speeding up the process of monitoring large-scale forests in minutes, not days. The pairs work automatically classifies raw data points captured by drone technology into individual trees and their components - revealing how carbon is stored in each tree and where microhabitats are formed. Light intercepted through the forest's canopy, creates shaded areas that may be beneficial to particular species in very dry or hot places. By understanding where these microhabitats are located will help to inform how they can be better protected. The Rise of AI for Biodiversity Conservation 🌱 Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how we monitor and protect our planet's biodiversity. From tracking endangered species to modeling complex ecosystems, AI is proving to be a game-changer for conservation efforts worldwide. Recent advances in computer vision, drones, satellite imagery and machine learning are enabling conservationists to collect vast amounts of data and gain predictive insights that were previously impossible. For example, Microsoft's AI for Earth program developed real-time camera traps that can identify individual animals with over 94% accuracy. This allows researchers to monitor populations and migrations in remote areas more efficiently. In Colombia, scientists used AI to analyze high-resolution satellite images and create detailed maps of every single tree in the country's Amazon rainforest region. This massive dataset is helping them assess biodiversity levels and carbon storage potential. Team Epoch won first place in a competition hosted by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, focused on using machine learning to map giant kelp forests via satellite imagery. Coastal ecosystems face increasing threats from climate change and overfishing. Giant kelp, recognised as a "foundation species", plays a central role by providing food for herbivores, promoting ocean health, and serving as an efficient carbon sink. Traditionally, studying coastal ecosystems required laborious seabed sampling tasks performed by divers, which were costly and time-consuming. However, recent technological advancements enable the monitoring of giant kelp using space-based AI models, significantly enhancing research efficiency and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional underwater sampling methods. The insights gained from this research can improve marine biodiversity, ecosystem resilience, and CO2 sequestration potential. The kelp competition has officially ended. While browsing Safari, I came across a compelling article by Val Maloney, dated May 24, 2024, which explores how artificial intelligence might aid in the conservation of beluga whales. As a passionate advocate for beluga whales, I was disheartened to learn of their endangered status. The article examines how advancements in systems design engineering and AI could significantly enhance whale-spotting efficiency. It notes that beluga whale populations in the Arctic are increasingly threatened by global warming, oil spills, and gas development, with these threats documented through aerial surveys. This reality underscores the urgent need for sustainable practices in the face of climate change and environmental degradation. Dr. Marcoux and his team have developed a more effective method for identifying beluga whales by leveraging remote sensing technology. They have created automated extraction algorithms for interpreting remote sensing imagery. By training these algorithms with images of beluga whales, they discovered that only 5% of the surveyed images contained the whales. This focus allows researchers to concentrate on relevant data, significantly reducing the resources needed for analysis. One key insight from the article is the impressive and rapidly evolving role of AI in such research. Previously, capturing and analyzing images required multiple summers, with a vast majority lacking beluga whales. Thanks to AI, data collection has been streamlined to a single summer, potentially reducing the effort to just eight hours of work. This evolution in AI capability highlights its growing sophistication and efficiency. As a former submarine officer, I'm always fascinated by new technologies that can be used to explore and protect the ocean. Check out this article that discusses a new Google AI tool called SurfPerch that can be used to monitor coral reef health. Coral reefs are essential to the health of our oceans, but they are also threatened by climate change and pollution. SurfPerch uses underwater sounds to identify fish and assess biodiversity. This information can be used to track reef activity and health. The article also describes a project called Calling in Our Corals, which collected data from citizen scientists. SurfPerch was trained on this data and can now analyze large amounts of audio data to identify fish sounds. This will allow scientists to more easily monitor reefs. In my former career, I spent a lot of time underwater. I saw firsthand the beauty and fragility of the ocean. I'm glad to see that new technologies are being developed to help protect these vital ecosystems. What are your thoughts on this new AI tool?
