This is a tough one for me. If you know me at all, you know that nothing is more important to me than my family and strengthening my relationship to the divine. My son chose to serve a mission and was called to Ecuador. He has already had many life changing experiences there, but was recently transferred to the edge of the Amazon. He was pumped to see natural beauty after spending months in the big city. We were just informed that he has been diagnosed with dengue fever. I’ve had a lot of change in my life recently as I look for my next career move, but this news has immediately consumed me. Whatever your beliefs, he and I would appreciate your thoughts and prayers. I know many tire of personal stuff finding it’s way to LinkedIn, but this crowd has been so good to me I couldn’t resist asking for your support. Thanks. ***Blown away by all the support. Thank you! I’m assuming he’ll be ok. Lots of people reaching out that they’ve had it before. Didn’t realize it was that common. Just have a hard time processing the stat that 1 in 20 have severe complications. That’s enough reason to beg for prayers.
Not only will I pray, but my entire family will. Decades ago, Missionaries knocked on my parents door when I was 3 yrs. old. I still remember Elder Steven Anderson. I am so very grateful for missionaries and their service. I know they are deeply loved by our Heavenly Father and the Savior. I am confident your son will heal completely and that he will continue to touch hearts and bring souls to Christ. May the Lord comfort you and give you peace. 😊🙏🙏🙏
You're the man, Alex. You and your son will definitely be in my thoughts and prayers. FWIW, I served in Thailand and dengue fever was fairly common. There was one season that was particularly bad and I think we had like 12 missionaries that all had it at the same time. I won't pretend like there's no chance for complications (as there is always that chance with any illness), and I think all the missionaries who got it would definitely tell you it wiped them out pretty good, but FWIW they all made full recoveries with no lasting complications whatsoever. And most of them had a couple funny/interesting stories to tell after :) I don't want to invalidate your concern either though as that's a completely valid feeling. As mentioned, you'll be in my prayers!
My friend. I’m sorry. I got it twice on my mission. It’s tough and uncomfortable but he is strong if he’s like you :) sending my love. You’ve got this and he’s got this and He’s got this ❤️❤️
Prayers coming your way!
I gotcha brother. Godspeed
I had dengue fever while serving as a missionary in Brazil on the Amazon. It was incredibly painful and felt like all my bones were being broken. Just crushing. I know what your son is going through and just said a prayer for him. I hope and pray he will be okay.
Dengue freaking Fever! So sorry to hear that, Alex! My son (who's serving a mission in Cancun) contracted Dengue on day 5 in Mexico 4ish months ago. It hit him like a 2x4 in the face. He tried to keep plowing ahead for a couple of days (he said, "How can I miss church as a missionary?"), but ultimately let himself rest, which was relieving to hear. By day 6, he was feeling well enough to get back to work and has felt fine ever since. I'm a believer in the collective power of prayer and will join my prayers to yours. 🙏
My son just got back from Peru i December, where he also caught dengue. Despite it being painful and exhausting for a time (and scary for me as a mom!), I am happy to say he recovered and completed his service and is now thriving at BYU Hawaii. Having a missionary strengthened my belief in prayer and also deepened my appreciation for what these young men and women go through--it is truly remarkable and life changing. They are amazing! Kudos to you and your son for this selfless service!
Had dengue fever on my mission and was told it was nothing and had to run a mission wide conference the same day and I passed out (sleeping) on a bench after getting all the work done. It was brutal. The rash showed up later as proof it wasn't "nothing". Then another missionary in the office got it 3 days later and got 3 days off proselyting. Prayers are up for your son. Apparently getting it once isn't that dangerous, getting it consecutive times is where the real complications are more likely.
