141 million tons. That’s how much #plastic created by consumer goods producers. Tons and tons of plastic is used to package products before they hit the shelves. Sadly, only 9% of this gets #recycled as per the Circularity Gap report. ♻️ It's tough dealing with all this plastic waste. Which makes our environmental issues harder to fix. Funny enough, I was working on a project to use recyclable plastic for our #packaging. I asked myself: Why bother with packaging if most of it ends up in landfills? 🤔 So, I talked to a sustainability expert. She agreed: ➡️ Without recycling infrastructure, the material will end up in a landfill. ➡️ Few governments are willing or able to invest in recycling. It’s a tough spot to be in. But she also told me: Every company has a responsibility to act. This can also influence policy changes. Here are two big things I learnt: 📚 1️⃣ Addressing the entire life cycle of packaging requires #collaboration. The strategy should include steps to finish the cycle. This could mean starting projects to collect waste and working with partners. It also means figuring out if recycling makes sense economically. 2️⃣ Without changing #systems, progress will not continue. Clear rules are important for making plastic more sustainable. We need global rules to cut plastic waste and set product design standards to turn trash into value. These steps can help more people use #recyclable packaging and solve environmental problems. With our Circularity Roadmap for plastic packaging, we want to contribute to a zero-waste society and accelerate the reduction of fossil-based plastic. Our goals and milestones are: ▶️ Overcome the peak of plastic use by 2030 and recycle 50% of plastic used by weight. ▶️ Plastic Packaging Net Zero Waste by 2040, where the amount of plastic used in our packaging and the amount of recycled material used or collected by us is equal. ▶️ Plastic Packaging Negative Waste by 2050, where the quantity of plastic recycled is greater than the plastic packaging produced. Each piece of single-use plastic pushes us deeper into ecological debt. Here’s a not-so-fun fact: Over 220 billion kilograms of plastic will be produced in 2024, and 70 billion of it will be used just once before being tossed away.1 That’s a growing planet-wide debt, increasing with every disposable plastic bag and bottle. They are recyclable, and our gloveglu green project aims to reduce the amount of plastic that we use, however we'd love to find an alternative.......and love to reduce the amount of plastic we use.
