An intriguing commentary—lots of interesting points here. Although a well-crafted cover letter should be able to provide the customized narrative that targets the key focus areas of any specific job that someone is applying for. A mistake I see many people make is that they simply try to re-create their CV in narrative form in a cover letter—rather than use the letter as an opportunity to cherry pick some key areas for a deep dive that will highlight how well aligned they are for “that” specific job. I always tell my mentees to avoid a “copy/paste” approach to cover letters. Those letters are instantly recognizable and do not help you stand out (at least not in a positive light). Taking a customized approach serves as a great chance to show that you are putting careful thought into your application. It also allows the reader to see that you can think critically about how your skills and experiences align with their needs.
Are traditional academic CVs fit for purpose? 📑 A new article published by Cancer Research UK (CRUK) argues that traditional academic CVs often overlook the broader skill sets and contributions of researchers beyond publications and grants. The article explores role of the narrative CV in recognising diverse contributions in research and how CRUK has introduced narrative CVs. https://lnkd.in/eJFZUPRW

🌟 **Thrilled to Share My Journey as a Global Scholar-In-Training Awardee (GSITA) - 2024!** 🌟 Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the **AACR Annual Meeting 2024** in San Diego as a recipient of the Global Scholar-In-Training Award (GSITA). It was an absolutely **mind-blowing experience**, and I wanted to share how this award changed my research journey. As a passionate research scholar, one of my dreams was to present my research on an international stage. Due to funding constraints, I could previously only participate virtually in international conferences. But things changed when I came across the **AACR GSITA**, which supports early-career researchers with travel grants to attend the annual meeting. I submitted my abstract, CV, and cover letter (statement of purpose) before the deadline, and soon after, I was notified that my abstract had been selected! This was a huge moment for me, and it got even better when I was awarded the GSITA grant—a **$2000 USD** award that covered travel, food, with complimentary accommodation, and conference registration. During the event, I met so many brilliant minds from across the globe—fellow awardees, top scientists, leaders from the pharmaceutical industry, and experts in cancer research. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that has deeply impacted my career. I even had the opportunity to meet the **President of AACR**, **editors of AACR journals**, and other leading figures in the field. If you're an early-career researcher in the cancer field, **this is your chance to apply** for the **AACR Global Scholar-In-Training Award for 2025**. Don't miss this opportunity—it's truly a game-changer for your professional journey! 🌐 🗓 **Key Dates:** - **Abstract Submission Deadline:** November 26, 2024 - **GSITA Application Deadline:** November 26, 2024 - **AACR Annual Meeting:** April 25-30, 2025, Chicago **Eligibility:** Early-career researchers building cancer research capacities in eligible countries.
