Finding the right fit at a moment's notice - It's tougher than it looks. 📉 Statistically speaking, UK schools face a daunting task when the unexpected happens, and they need to find cover. The education sector is currently experiencing a significant shortage of qualified substitute teachers, an issue that most school administrators are all too familiar with. Why is this? A recent study highlights that nearly one in three schools find it challenging to secure cover for absent staff within 24 hours. It's not just about finding someone to fill the gap; it's about ensuring that quality teaching continues without pause. After all, every lesson counts in shaping our future generations. From my experience, this conundrum requires a multifaceted approach, combining flexible working solutions with a robust, vetted pool of educational professionals. Supporting a Team of Experienced Air Conditioning, Heating, Mechanical and Refrigeration, Design and Heating Specialists
Article about the difficulty attracting people into teaching. The article is interesting, but there are many different reasons that article does not cover. I was speaking to an assistant head at a secondary school, her son is 26 and went down the engineering route. He now earns more than she did when she retired. Generally holidays in industry have crept up a bit. Teacher work a bit more during holidays, on bit longer during the day doing admin tasks. Question to teachers, ex teachers. What is was the main thing that would make you want to leave teaching? #teachers #education

7 Skills required to become a successful supply teacher Flexibility Supply teachers must be very adaptable and happy to go to a new school, often with little notice in order to cover an unexpected staff absence. You could be asked to teach a subject that is not your specialist subject and there may not always be detailed instructions left for the lesson, so you will need to have a flexible mindset. Rapport building As a supply teacher, you need to be able to build a rapport with students quickly, as you do not have the benefit of teaching them every day and building a relationship over time. You need to be able to quickly engage with students so that they make progress in the lesson. Well-organised When you are working in a job where the requirements change all of the time, having good organisation skills will be key to getting settled in quickly so that you can get lessons started immediately. Patience When students know that they have a supply teacher, this can sometimes lead some students to behave less respectfully than they do with their usual teacher. You may need to be patient to deal with any behaviour issues. Classroom management Due to the potential behaviour issues in some schools and classes, supply teachers must have good classroom management skills to help prevent any poorly behaved students from distracting other students during the lesson. Communication As well as being able to communicate well with students to drive lesson engagement and help to ensure good behaviour, supply teachers need to have good communication skills to work with the members of staff in the school they work in. Often, the teachers who pass over the lesson plan or instructions will be limited for time, so it is important that you can quickly establish the requirements for the lesson and the teacher can leave you to get on with the lesson without being interrupted from their own work. Passion for teaching It should go without saying that anyone who wants to become a teacher has a passion for teaching and helping students to develop the knowledge that will help them to achieve their potential. Teaching can be a very rewarding career, whether you are a permanent teacher or a supply teacher, you get the opportunity to demonstrate your passion for teaching every working day. At Tick Education we are dedicated to placing candidates into teaching and assisting opportunities within primary and secondary schools. If you are looking for your next role, either as a supply teacher or if you are looking for a permanent role, see our current vacancies at TickEducation.co.uk or send an email with your CV to Nathan@TickEducation.co.uk

Teacher recruitment is an issue we feel really passionately about; and while we support the new Government's plan to recruit 6,500 new teachers, there's no doubt that we need to make some practical changes to the system to support that ambition. We've identified two key issues: firstly, it's not the case that people don't want to train to teach - it's that they can't afford to. And secondly, we need teacher training to be seen as a prestigious route and to gain greater exposure nationally. For some of our suggestions on to tackle these issues, you can read more on the blog from our CEO, Jane Fletcher. It's nothing seismic or dramatic - just some straightforward, common sense, applied intentionally to streamline processes, unpick some confusing policies, and genuinely demonstrate to our future and current teachers that we value the development of a great workforce. #teacherrecruitment #uncommoncommonsense #everylessonshapesalife

How do we get 6,500 new teachers into the profession? It was a privilege for the team to feed into Jane Fletcher's thinking on this. At Aldridge Education, we are passionate about growing new teachers and allowing them to thrive in the profession for the long term. Throughout our SCITT recruitment, we have been exposed to many barriers candidates face even getting their foot in the door. We have some ideas - they are not rocket science. Sometimes the simple tweaks can make all the difference. Read the new blog linked below - do you agree? What more can we be doing? #education #6500newteachers #SCITT #GrowingTogether

The Teacher Tapp and SchoolDash annual report on teacher recruitment and retention has just been released, providing insights on the current state of the teaching profession in England. While there are some positive changes happening, there are still plenty of hurdles to overcome. The report emphasises the importance of better support systems, professional development, and work-life balance to keep great teachers in our schools. It's clear that if we want to retain top talent, we need to make some strategic shifts in how we support and develop our educators. One of the standout points is how closely teacher well-being is tied to student success. Schools that focus on keeping their teachers happy not only retain more staff but also see better student performance. This makes it crucial for policymakers and educational leaders to pay attention and take action, in order to improve educational outcomes. Have a read of the interesting report below ⬇ Emily Hollis MBE MUniv FCCT
