How is Alfa Laval helping a leading global yeast producer reduce their water usage? The food and beverage industry faces a growing challenge as water scarcity spreads. In Europe, stricter regulations combined with extreme weather events are pushing producers to optimise water usage. A leading global yeast producer, known for its commitment to sustainability, partnered with Alfa Laval to implement a membrane filtration step into their production process, achieving significant results: ⬇️ Reduced water consumption by maximising water reuse 📈 Increased energy efficiency in the evaporation stage Read the full case study to learn more about how the power of collaboration between industry leaders leads to innovative solutions at: https://lnkd.in/dvY4t9zC

50 grams of yeast takes 5 LITERS of water to produce... that translates to a LOT of wastewater. Restrictions on water use and releasing wastewater are getting more restrictive and companies pursuing improved sustainability know that they must lower their impact. Luckily - I work with a lot of smart people :-) Looking at this yeast suppliers process, an opportunity was seen to recycle and reuse a lot of wastewater into process steps, as well as lower energy intensity of the evaporation step (which can be very energy intensive). Next Week on June 14th we will have some of our best experts talking about things just like this! Come see how the magic happens. (Link in post below) In my conversations and travels, I see a lot of other processes dealing with similar challenges and I'm excited to talk to people in food, beverage, dairy, biofuels, and water/wastewater. If there's someone I should be chatting with, let me know and make an introduction if you would be so kind. #water #wastewater #sustainability #energyintensity #foodandbeverage

Well-designed Deposit Return Systems (DRS) deliver very high 📈 collection rates for PET bottles and Cans and therefore are a critical enabler for a ♻ circular economy for beverage packaging which in turn significantly reduces climate impacts. Those are some of the learnings from the recent DRS launches in Europe, the latest in Romania and soon to come Ireland and Hungary, bringing the total to 1️⃣ 6️⃣ EU Countries. Enabling policy frameworks are 🗝 key to accelerate the transition to a low carbon, circular economy. That’s why we, alongside partners such as UNESDA - Soft Drinks Europe and Natural Mineral Waters Europe (NMWE), call on those negotiating the EU’s #PPWR to maintain the obligation to set up DRS in each Member State and to only provide exemptions based on a 90% collection rate. Patented innovation for flattening cans, plastic bottles and beverage cartons with a volume of 0.25 to 3 liters. Up to 70 % space saving, up to 70 % less collection transport for recycling.
PPWR & Green Deal: Did you know that from 2025, all deposit containers in reverse vending machines in Austria will (have to) be plated in the one-way deposit system? With my collection machines, it will also be possible to plate deposit containers at all small return points as soon as clear and forgery-proof recording is possible using a serialised 2D barcode on the deposit containers. It is also possible to use my collection machines in supermarkets as stand-by collection aids for invalid deposit containers in order to save space. The savings potential, especially when transporting the flattened deposit containers to the sorting systems, can be up to 70 %. The flattening of lightweight packaging will be state of the art from 2023 - see EP patent and US patent - https://lnkd.in/grjHnwgH https://lnkd.in/dvF5H2ae and soon my collection machines will also be produced in Slovakia! https://lnkd.in/dNRqavMn

Clean Energy, Waste & Sustainability Knowledge Lawyer⚡️| Freeths LLP | Demystifying policy and regulation
Big announcement from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) (big cheese when it comes to validating emissions reductions targets). While recognising that there is an 'ongoing healthy debate on the subject matter', SBTi will now accept the use of voluntary carbon offsets or 'environmental attribute certificates' for the abatement of Scope 3 (i.e. supply chain) emissions. For a lot of companies, Scope 3 can represent over 90% of emissions so this = big boost to carbon credits, and if done right could increase carbon pricing, making it less attractive to emit in the first place. SBTi are v. clear they will not be validating the quality of carbon credits, but they will share additional guidance on 'basic rules, thresholds and guardrails' by July 2024. The guardrails will be key to prevent a slippery slope into greenwashing that is core to that 'ongoing healthy debate'.

Scope 3 emissions make-up a large part of a food company's carbon emissions. However, reporting and calculating scope 3 emissions is straightforward. Join us next week, February 27, to learn more about the challenges and solutions for reporting scope 3 emissions. https://lnkd.in/dDjHFChP

🌱 As a supplier it doesn't only matter how you are yourself meeting your own #sustainability goals, though it's much more about how we can help our customers to meet their sustainability goals. 🌿 Then it's great that there are independent organizations like SMSC and MY GREEN LAB® that evaluate suppliers, providing independent validation of the environmental impact of products evaluating manufacturing, use, packaging and disposal. ACT-labeled products are independently audited by Sustainable Management and Strategy Collaborative (SMSC) and verified by My Green Lab . 🥇So we are very proud that Waters Corporation is the first LC Column provider to receive "My Green Lab ACT" Ecolabel Certification for 42 of the #LCcolumns. The #ACQUITY and #CORTECS Columns are the first such products to earn the ACT Ecolabel! 💚 Hazel Dickson Bàrbara Bagó Lina Tsamili Richard Robinson Dr. Detlev Kurth Evelien Dejaegere Torsten Due Bryld Joakim Delaux Niccolò Bosso Philippe Vassault
