Long Duration Energy Storage: Powering a Sustainable Future Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) refers to technologies capable of storing energy for extended periods, from hours to days or even weeks. Unlike short-term solutions like batteries that discharge within a few hours, LDES plays a critical role in balancing supply and demand over longer timescales. It’s a game-changer for renewable energy, allowing us to store surplus energy generated from sources like solar and wind, and deploy it when needed, ensuring a steady power supply even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. One of the key technologies in LDES includes pumped hydro storage, where excess energy is used to pump water uphill into a reservoir, then released to generate electricity when required. Other emerging solutions include advanced battery systems, thermal energy storage, and hydrogen-based storage. Implementing LDES is crucial for achieving net-zero carbon emissions, as it enables a more reliable and resilient energy grid. By integrating these systems into our energy infrastructure, we can significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and move closer to a sustainable, renewable-powered future. Innovations in energy storage are moving towards utilizing carbon dioxide (CO2) to enhance renewable energy efficiency. New CO2 battery systems capture emissions from industrial sources, using them to store energy from renewable sources like wind and solar. This not only helps in managing power supply fluctuations but also aids in carbon capture. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has developed a gas-based membrane that captures CO2 more efficiently and cost-effectively. These systems, which convert CO2 into a solid form for storage, could significantly advance clean energy storage technologies. U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has issued its assessment of ASHRAE 90.1-2022 (I look forward to this study by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory every cycle): 🔷 The 2022 version will save about 10% over the 2019 standard. This ~10% (9.8% as published) is a national average estimate of site energy savings for commercial buildings. Similar savings (~9%) will be achieved in source energy and carbon emissions. 🔷 There are new requirements to address thermal bridging, and expanded criteria for whole-building air-leakage testing. This is particularly interesting, we are finally moving beyond U-values. 🔷 Other key changes: Renewable energy systems included as prescriptive requirement; Updated lighting power allowances; Additional guidance for using emissions metrics among others.   https://lnkd.in/gcNGdJM2

Some highlights: - P16 Annual primary energy intensity improvement, 2001-2022, 2023E, and by scenario, 2022-2030, where we need to double the effort to reach Net Zero for 2050. - P19 Primary energy intensity and total energy supply, G20 and non-G20 countries by region, 2021. It takes 3 times less energy to do the same thing in Europe than in other territories. - P35 IEA tracking of the key elements related to energy intensity progress. Industry progress is clearly behind the target.

"A well-known and highly effective way to address #decarbonization and project energy demand is to increase #energy efficiency. The IEA has described this as “the first fuel of a #sustainable global energy system” in their online publication Energy Efficiency – Topics – IEA. In industrial processes, a common way to increase energy efficiency is to recover waste heat. However, with low fuel, electricity and #CO2 prices over the past decade and limited incentives to really push waste heat recovery, its potential has remained largely untapped, both in terms of deployment and innovation. To underline its potential, according to a 2023 McKinsey report (Unlocking the potential of waste heat recovery | McKinsey), more than 3,100 TWh of waste heat could be converted into clean electricity worldwide."
