07/23/2024: MMSA Methanol Notes - US FAME Biodiesel Demand – Grounded While Renewable Biodiesel Skies United States (US) D4 RIN consumption figures show methanol consuming forms of biodiesel continuing to lose ground to non-methanol containing versions. MMSA Methanol Notes 01/23/2024 US Methanol Demand in Biodiesel – Growing While Shrinking   United States (US) D4 RIN consumption figures through 2023 have methanol consuming forms of biodiesel growing while losing ground to non-methanol containing versions. With domestic production rising, and imports higher, fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) based biodiesel, which contains methanol, continues to expand at a deliberate pace. Biofuel blending has it own share of Prons & Cons as it tries to address Climate Change and Circular economy. Plants like Corn, Soyabean, Wheat, Sugarcane & Biomass are extensively used to derive ethanol that is further blended with diesel or directly biodiesel. Blending is done typically done in ratio of (5 to 20) % with Petroleum product, which also depends extensively on automotive manufacturer making flex engines that can utilize this biofuel with higher efficiency. Characterizing the presence of Fatty Acid Methy Ester (FAME) in biodiesel is very important to achieve higher engine shelf-life and greater efficiency.
