Processed Animal Proteins (PAPs) are a product of the rendering process when fat and moisture have been extracted from Category 3 materials. Alongside a higher protein content than traditional feed ingredients, PAPs also offer a lower carbon alternative, with just 10% of associated greenhouse gas emissions compared to soya meal. Canada’s Methane Strategy aims to reduce domestic methane emissions by more than 35 percent of 2020 levels by 2030. Several strategies show potential to significantly reduce enteric methane emissions while maintaining current production levels. Of those strategies, the feed additive 3-NOP appears to be well suited for beef production in Alberta, given the presence of feedlot operations within the province. Our research examined the impact of 3-NOP supplementation on total lifetime methane emissions of beef steers in various Alberta production systems. We found that 100% adoption of 3-NOP can cut 4% of total enteric methane emissions in the province. However, the commercial availability of 3-NOP remains years away because the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has classified 3-NOP as a veterinary supplement, which requires a significantly longer approval process than if it were classified as a dietary feed supplement. As a result, Canada cannot assert itself as a global leader in low-emission beef production, especially when considering that 3-NOP has already obtained approval for use in over 40 countries, including Brazil, Chile, the EU/EEA, and Australia. #SustainableBeef #cdnag #cdnpoli

Readily soluble in fatty tissues they may accumulate up the food chain, so their presence in animal feeds poses a risk to consumers of animal-derived products.
