"Tracking" refers to the forward movement of diamonds from the mine to the market, ensuring each step is documented and verifiable. "Traceability," on the other hand, often implies a backwards-looking approach—tracing a diamond's origin after it has reached the consumer. Using the term "tracking" more accurately reflects the proactive measures needed to monitor diamonds throughout their journey, reducing the risk of illicit trade and unethical practices. EMPOWERING MINING COUNTRIES THROUGH TECHNOLOGY Such articles seem to convey that the technological solutions for diamond tracking are predominantly based in importing or manufacturing countries. This raises concerns about the autonomy and involvement of mining nations in the supply chain. By centralising tracking technologies within consuming countries, we inadvertently sideline the source countries that are integral to the diamond industry. Mining countries should be at the forefront of implementing and benefiting from tracking technologies. Empowering these nations with the necessary tools and systems enhances the efficiency and credibility of the tracking process and promotes economic development and governance within these regions. ADDRESSING THE IMBALANCE IN THE GLOBAL DIAMOND INDUSTRY The current dynamic is reminiscent of historical patterns where consuming nations dictate terms to producing countries. To foster a more equitable industry, it's imperative that mining countries have a vested interest and active participation in the tracking of their natural resources. This approach can lead to: Improved Transparency: When source countries manage tracking from the outset, it ensures that data is accurate and unaltered throughout the supply chain. Economic Benefits: Local implementation of tracking technologies can create jobs, build technical expertise, and stimulate economic growth in mining regions. Ethical Assurance: Consumers gain greater confidence knowing that diamonds are tracked responsibly from the point of origin, adhering to ethical and environmental standards set by the source countries. RECOMMENDATION Reframing the approach to diamond tracking by involving mining countries more directly addresses ethical considerations and promotes a fairer distribution of benefits within the industry. It's crucial for all stakeholders to collaborate in redefining these processes, ensuring that technological advancements empower rather than marginalise the nations at the very heart of the diamond supply chain.
