Don't copy somebody else's journey... realize you're in control and authoring your life... so make it an epic adventure worth living and sharing with others. +++++++++ At times, your path in life will take unexpected twists and turns with difficulties and setbacks. Sometimes you'll feel like you're not making progress or even regressing. You may feel like you've lost your way and fallen off your path in life. At these times it's your inner compass-- your Ethos-- which will illuminate the journey-- gently telling you both which way to go and which paths to avoid. As veterans, we’re taught to never surrender. To fight until the very end. But what if I told you that surrendering isn’t the end, but a beginning? A powerful act of transformation and strength. Surrendering the old you, the one clad in uniform, fighting battles outside, to uncover a new you, equipped to fight the more subtle, internal battles. It’s about letting go of the military mindset that no longer serves us in civilian life and embracing vulnerability as our greatest weapon. The journey of self-care and adaptation is not a sign of weakness; it’s a testament to our strength. It’s about acknowledging that the same strategies that protected us in combat may not serve us in peace. To my fellow veterans, let’s redefine surrender. Let it not be a word that signifies defeat, but one that heralds the beginning of a new chapter. A chapter where we allow ourselves to feel, to heal, and to grow. Where we take the skills and memories from our past and evolve them into tools for our future. Remember, it’s not about forgetting where we’ve come from, but about moving forward with all we’ve learned. You gave everything to the mission. What about them? They accepted that you did something you believed was important. Patient with the constant house moves. Dealt with the stress when you were recovering from the intensity. Kept the faith when you left them alone for months. Reminded you that there was a life to come back to. When you felt like you had nothing left, they showed you how untrue that was. None of us exists in a vacuum. We might tell ourselves we’re heroes. We can do it by ourselves. That’s bull crap. None of us can. These relationships, our lifelines, look different for all of us. Some wore a uniform as well. Others wouldn’t have seen one since school. Didn’t make them any less valuable. Less real. Now you’ve decided to change things, are you finally making the space for them? Or are you still putting them last? You don’t need to choose. I think I can speak for anyone who has ever moved... Saying goodbye to your longtime home is incredibly bittersweet and emotional. From the quiet everyday moments to our biggest milestones, the walls of our homes have seen it all. An agent’s role in the sale of your home entails many things– They should provide expert counsel, price the property appropriately, market it thoroughly, and negotiate favorable terms. But most of all, a seller’s agent should be an empathetic advisor as their clients go through the highs and lows of this huge life event. Look out for these key qualities in a seller’s agent: Active listener: They pay close attention to your wishes, concerns and hesitations. Strong communicator: They keep you informed at each stage of the process and provide resources for questions that arise. Emotional intelligence: They recognize this is a significant life event. Have you found your tribe? Experiencing military service means becoming part of a team. This can be likened to joining a tribe. The tribe functions for a common purpose and exhibits a strong sense of solidarity in its behaviour. Tribes have strong and distinct personal identities. These tribes possess distinct cultures, norms (on-time=late), languages (Hoo-ah, Oorah, All the Way, Easy Day), traditions (salutes, Taps, toasts) , symbols (berets, badges and patches), rites of passage (boot, tech school, prop-blast, blood wings, spur rides) , heroes (Darby, Patton, Puller, Hatchcock, Nimitz), expectations, character traits to be praised and others to be scorned. Then you get out. And all that is gone. And the rest of the world just keeps rotating and you quietly feel alone. Suddenly your sense of belonging to a tribe disappears an you're just... you. Today, I had a moment that was both humbling and enlightening. I went out to my garden to pick some carrots, anticipating a bountiful harvest. What I found were tiny, underwhelming carrots that clearly weren’t ready yet. At first, I was disappointed. I had put in the time and effort, and the results just didn’t measure up to my expectations. But then I realized, this experience is a lot like my anticipation of transitioning out of the military. The thought of leaving the military and starting a new chapter has been filled with a range of emotions—anxiety, worry, excitement, and everything in between. It’s easy to feel discouraged when things don’t go as planned. Just like those tiny carrots, sometimes the results don’t immediately reflect the effort put in. I’ve learned that it’s okay to have moments where we don’t feel quite ready. It’s okay to be a bit “underwhelming” as we find our footing. What’s important is that we continue to nurture our growth, remain patient, and trust the process. Every step forward, no matter how small, is progress. And in time, with the right care and dedication, we’ll find that we’ve grown stronger and more resilient than we ever imagined. To all my fellow veterans and anyone else going through a big life transition: keep nurturing your growth. Be patient with yourself. Trust that, with time, you’ll be ready to fully bloom.
