#throwback Educational Visit to Sibu Water Board On 6th December 2024, Kolej Laila Taib organized an educational visit to the Sibu Water Board, providing a unique opportunity for students to gain firsthand knowledge of water treatment plant construction. The group comprised 30 students from the Civil Engineering and Quantity Surveying departments, accompanied by three dedicated lecturers. This initiative was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application, aligning with the college’s commitment to producing industry-ready graduates. The main contractor for the project is Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd. This project aims to upgrade the capacity of the Salim Water Treatment Plant from 150 million liters per day (MLD) to 300 MLD to meet the increasing water demand within the Sibu Water Board supply area until Year 2036. This enhancement will also increase the reserve margin of the water treatment plant to 30%, contributing to the Sarawak Water Supply Grid Programme for the central region. Additionally, the project also brings numerous benefits, primarily by providing access to clean water, which will significantly enhance public health, foster environmental conservation, and support economic growth in the region. Furthermore, it is expected to cater to an estimated population of 350,000 people up to the year 2036, benefiting communities across Sibu District, Kanowit, Selangau, Maradong, and Rassau. Learning, living and supporting the team Every workday since August, 2022, Preeshan Napit has looked out for his colleagues’ safety. His work as an Underground Site Engineer on Snowy 2.0 constantly challenges him, and Preeshan says that’s a big part of what makes it rewarding. “Snowy 2.0 is a massive project with many new #engineering aspects and ideas. I conduct daily inspections of tunnels for the safety of the crew, my main focus, and I also focus on production,” Preeshan says. While he enjoys his R&R breaks, it’s the work that invigorates Preeshan most. In true Snowy fashion, he appreciates meeting and becoming friends with people from diverse cultures. Programs like this are so important. They support Newcomers with getting their foot in the door to their first job, and that’s a big deal if someone has low level English. However, the question I always ask myself is “What’s next?” Language learning can’t end here. (remember it takes around 500 hours to increase by one level) It’s easy to study English when you aren’t working. But once a person is working (possibly multiple jobs), language learning usually gets put to the bottom of the list and people get stuck in their jobs. If workplaces want to retain and promote their Newcomer staff, they need to think about the “what’s next”, they need to think about how they can support their staff to continue their language learning journey in a way that’s: ➡ Flexible ➡ Industry/position specific ➡ Accessible ➡ Is customized for the business and the individual Looking forward to having more conversations about how we can do this. KMSB - Kimberley Marine Support Base launches advanced floating wharf for Port Of Broome KMSB is developing a state-of-the-art marine facility tailored to Broome's unique environment and significant tidal variations. The new port infrastructure at the ort of Broome will feature a floating wharf, designed by OSK Design, connected to a fixed causeway. This design enables safe and efficient 24/7 operations, regardless of tide levels. The design and location of the KMSB facility have been meticulously planned to address the interests and concerns of various Broome stakeholders. Following extensive consultations, KMSB has optimized the design to eliminate the need for dredging and minimize the total area of seabed disturbance. By combining modern marine infrastructure with a contemporary operating model, KMSB aims to deliver advanced solutions that reduce costs and carbon emissions while enhancing efficiency across a wide range of activities. The floating wharf “Kimberly Link” was launched yesterday (15th January) from Nantong Rainbow Offshore & Engineering Equipment (ROC). The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC ) has offered automatic jobs to 190 Nigerians it sponsored under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The company’s efforts align with the Federal Government’s National Local Content Policy for Railway development. The policy emphasises the involvement of competent local engineers, technicians, and craftsmen in railway projects, ensuring knowledge transfer and technical participation through training and apprenticeship programmes. The graduates, who specialised in railway and other transportation-related fields, are now set to play pivotal roles in Nigeria’s growing transportation sector. The CCECC has not only sponsored their education but is also committed to securing job opportunities within the company. This commitment reflects CCECC’s broader goal of integrating technical know-how and fostering industrial cooperation in Nigeria. This is very impressive. Although, I thought the federal government would offer these graduates jobs at the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, Katsina when I heard that they've graduated as the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Ltd (CCECC) has handed over the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, Katsina, to the Federal Government. The government need these graduates to manage the Kajola Wagon Assembly Plant in Ogun State as well. The plant has an annual capacity of producing 500 wagons, including open wagons, container flat wagons and box wagons. The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) have sponsored close to 1000 Nigerians to study in China and the company has built some facilities for us to improve our transportation sector. With this, it is high time for the government to leverage these facilities and the newly acquired skills and knowledge of these graduates to drive economic growth and modernisation of the transportation sector. Indonesia has built its high-speed train after being the first country in Southeast Asia to have 350 km/h high-speed train which is made in China. Indonesia is conducting the second phase of its high-speed train by itself and the prototype is out. The first test of Indonesian-made high-speed train will be conducted in 2027 in new line from Bandung to Surabaya upgrading the existing track.
