Reflecting on the early days of 'digital media' in Malaysia back in 2007 when it all started for me at GroupM; convincing brands to invest at all was a challenge! I recall a bank client questioning the need for a credit card Google search. We were told to go back and understand the banking landscape properly before seeing him again. Haha! Challenging times for getting clients on board, but it pushed us to truly understand the heart of the brands, products, and audiences we worked with. We learned to build solid, objective, and convincing arguments to pitch the value of digital—because it wasn’t just about the platforms, it was about their business and their customers. I love how far digital, data, and all those wonderful tools have come. But sometimes I find myself frustrated by how we get caught up in endless data points and what not — forgetting the importance of context and strategy that directly relate to the business and the people behind it.
