Reflections on My Shanghai Business Trip
My last day in Shanghai wraps up an intense, insightful five-day journey through China’s business landscape, filled with valuable lessons and unexpected connections. Here’s what I’m taking away:
1. Mastering the Art of Visual Merchandising
It was fascinating to see how a single company created sub-brands within their stores to connect with diverse audiences. This strategy emphasized that merchandising isn’t just about duplicating others; it’s about creating tailored, localized experiences. Trends are constantly shifting, and the “one-size-fits-all” approach no longer applies. Poor merchandising, especially in high-rent areas, can sink a business fast. The takeaway? Stay adaptable, stay relevant.
2. Smart Automation for Smart Business
Automation isn’t just about reducing headcount—it’s about enhancing consistency and efficiency. Witnessing a vast warehouse operated by only 34 people reminded me of the huge gains smart automation can bring to daily operations. Technology, when embraced effectively, makes jobs easier and improves reliability across the board.
3. Dare to Dream Big
The 35-year-old market leader we visited didn’t get there by aiming low. Many older companies haven’t even achieved local dominance, let alone global recognition. This experience reinforced the importance of big ambitions—conquer your immediate challenges, but always keep an eye on larger goals. Improvement and empathy should guide every step.
4. The Power of Physical Distribution
As digital as the world gets, the staying power of traditional distribution channels shouldn’t be underestimated. Connections with physical stores and networks continue to add real value. Not everything is online—or can be online—and a physical presence can remain one of the strongest foundations for market reach.
5. Building Friendships and Real-World Insights
Beyond business, this trip connected me with multiple distributors, mall owners, and category market leaders, adding depth to my understanding of the industry. I also gained real-life insights on importing and purchasing products—knowledge you simply won’t find in textbooks.
In short, my Shanghai journey provided invaluable lessons in branding, automation, ambition, and the enduring power of relationships and practical experience.
