Deepfakes represent a growing challenge in the field of digital forensics, blending sophisticated artificial intelligence with malicious intent to create highly convincing yet entirely fabricated content. My reflection on the role of forensics in addressing this issue is for digital forensics to adapt to the rapidly advancing AI technologies behind deepfakes. Traditional forensic techniques such as metadata analysis or hashing may fall short in detecting these synthetic creations, as they can be meticulously designed to evade conventional detection methods. This means forensic investigators need to leverage AI-driven tools themselves, including those capable of analyzing pixel-level inconsistencies, detecting anomalies in biometric patterns, or identifying irregularities in audio-visual synchronization. The incorporation of machine learning models that can compare suspected deepfakes against known authentic samples might also become standard practice, providing a layer of verification that goes beyond human perception.

To combat deepfakes, organizations must take a multifaceted approach to identity authentication. For example, despite biometrics being a strong login option, one sole mode of authentication – like a fingerprint or facial recognition – is simply not enough to protect against today’s motivated, sophisticated fraudsters. New data from the 2024 report Battle Against AI-Driven Identity Fraud by Signicat found that AI-driven fraud is now responsible for 42.5 per cent of all detected fraud attempts in the financial and payments sector. It is also estimated that 29 per cent of those attempts are considered successful. It revealed that AI-enhanced fraud tactics, such as deepfakes, synthetic identities, and sophisticated phishing campaigns allow fraudsters to operate at an unprecedented scale and level of sophistication. With an 80 per cent surge in overall fraud attempts, the financial sector only has 22 per cent of firms implementing AI defences. Facing this evolving threat landscape, financial institutions are increasingly aware that traditional defences are proving insufficient against AI-powered attacks. How long before AI can accurately embed fake biometric from a picture on a dynamically moving video ? I think, not that long "Organizations turn to biometrics to counter deepfakes" This control won't stay relevant very long. I think that again, overlapping control, including out of band communication can help proper authentication.
