If you get overwhelmed around a ton of people like I do, my employer PartnerHero is sponsoring CHAIR MASSAGES at the conference. You're welcome! See you there! 2️⃣ I wrote a pretty basic Pros & Cons of Outsourcing Moderation article: https://lnkd.in/gHSi4HJx -- sometimes it can be helpful to literally write out all the good/ bad things when you're making a decision, so maybe this will help some folks? I've had some good conversations recently with people thinking through this issue-- reach out to me if you want to chat. 3️⃣ The "Egg Theory" of AI agents by Rex Woodbury is really good - putting into words a lot of what I've been seeing about AI agents/ copilots. https://lnkd.in/gEVdSqpS 4️⃣ I was interviewed for Radio SOSO by Martin Cocker and he did NOT pitch softball questions! https://lnkd.in/gzzh94s3 5️⃣ AI CSAM is not a "victimless crime" from 404 Media - https://lnkd.in/gj9mwwF8 6️⃣ As many of you know, I've been a very vocal member of the Integrity Institute since almost the beginning, and my podcast is distributed through them. 🔴 TEDx Speaker | Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Consultant | Lived Experiences | 🚀 Turning Awkward Conversations into Powerful Moments
👀 Look at THAT ChatGPT response! It's Pride month, and the whole world seems to be exploding in a rainbow of colours! While I appreciate the intent but sometimes even good things can be taken too far. When planning my upcoming Pride Talks, I realised we all have more to learn when it comes to celebrating diversity and inclusion authentically. The truth is, technology alone can't solve the complex challenges of building truly inclusive spaces. As helpful as AI can be, we can't treat it as the end-all-be-all. The real magic happens when we blend innovation with good old human empathy, pride, and a deep commitment to understanding diverse perspectives. I was pleasantly surprised by how thoughtfully ChatGPT responded when I gave blunt feedback - maybe a lesson for us all in dealing with criticism! This Pride month and beyond, let's celebrate the full vibrant spectrum of colours, identities, and lived experiences. But we don't need to rainbow-wash every single thing. Sometimes, a little thoughtfulness and restraint can go a long way in honouring the LGBTQ+ community. So let's party with passion and purpose - no need for excessive glitter cannons or forced representation. ✨ If we approach diversity and inclusion with humility and a willingness to learn, we can create spaces that are genuinely welcoming for all.

What can companies do to make safer, more comfortable spaces for their 2SLGBTQ+ employees? We talked to Michael Bach, CCDP/AP 🏳️🌈 on a LifeSpeak Podcast episode, to help answer that question. According to Michael, author and thought leader in inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility, one way to do that is to become more visible as an organization in supporting the community. “Hoisting the Pride flag during June, putting out safe space stickers throughout the organization. It is a visible thing. One thing to keep in mind is that as 2SLGBTQ+people, we're the invisible minority. So [being visible about 2SLGBTQ+ support] says this is a space where I can be myself, where I don't have to look over my shoulder or I don't have to worry that people are going to be considerate of who I am as a human being.” In the podcast, Michael highlights more ways to make workplaces safer for 2SLGBTQ+ employees including: ▪️ Zero-tolerance policies and procedures, ▪️ Educating people and avoiding gendered language, and ▪️ Using symbolism to signal support, not only in June, but all year long. While this podcast episode was originally recorded in 2022, the conversation about creating safe and inclusive spaces for 2SLGBTQ+ employees remains as relevant and important as ever, especially with so many rights under fire in North America, and continued oppression in many parts of the world. Listen now and learn how to build a workplace where 2SLGBTQ+ employees feel safe, valued, protected, and respected: https://okt.to/D7XZ6v #PrideMonth #Inclusion #WorkplaceCulture #LifeSpeakInc

Today marks the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a pivotal moment in 1969 that ignited the LGBTQIA+ rights movement. While we celebrate the significant progress made, we acknowledge that discrimination and social stigma still affect many lives. In order to continue the fight for equality and understanding, AI technology also gives its contribution with the introduction of the new project "AI Comes Out of the Closet." This online study, created by MIT graduates Daniel Pillis and Pat Pataranutaporn, uses AI-generated dialogue and virtual characters to simulate real-world scenarios that LGBTQIA+ individuals face, especially the challenges of coming out in the workplace. By merging technological innovation with a dedication to inclusivity, this initiative aims to foster empathy, understanding, and advocacy skills, contributing to the ongoing struggle for equality both legally and socially. “There's something about queer culture that celebrates the artificial through kitsch, camp, and performance," says D. Pillis. 🌈✨ Let's embrace and celebrate this unique culture today and every day! 🌈✨ Discover more about their project on: 👉 https://lnkd.in/dWiyBWEw #PrideMonth #technews #AI #LGBTQIA

Who's in for PSR in Los Angeles in September?! Hope to see you there! I will be moderating a panel called "Language Matters: Addressing Bias in LLMs" - but the title doesn't quite give all the clues. We'll specifically be talking about data collection needs and inclusion concerns as represented in language selection, as it applies to marginalized groups, and specifically those identifying within the LGBTQ+ community - see full description below. #aigovernance #responsibleai #aibias #psr2024 #ailaw Speakers include: Katy Felkner, PhD Candidate, University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute Jevan Hutson, CIPP/A, CIPP/E, CIPP/US, CIPM, CIPT, FIP, Associate, Privacy and Security, Davis Wright Tremaine Sean Perryman , Global Head of AI & Fairness Policy, Uber Panel description: Respect is about feeling seen and heard. The language we use to describe ourselves and others reflects that respect, and aligning that language to people’s identities is key to understanding and addressing bias in everyday interactions, whether with other people or LLM-driven chatbots. The challenge in building data and modeling systems — whether spreadsheet analytics, ML, or AI — is in reflecting a diversity of identities in the language of the outputs or product. Evaluating these models for bias is then a matter of assessing the success with which this diversity is reflected in the language of the outputs. This panel will explore how to build an LLM: defining bias and addressing user expectations, legal risk, and alignment with the human need to feel respected and seen in the tools we use. The panels includes experts at the intersection of engineering and law with rich experience building responsible AI.

The weather continues to be great in Boston, and while snacking on some of the now ripe autumn olives on a walk I was able to catch some talks for my #AcademicRunPlaylist! Reminder that you can subscribe to my playlists here: https://lnkd.in/eu4MAPfs First were a pair of talks by Siwei Lyu (deepfake detection in the real world) and Venkatesh Babu Radhakrishnan (uncovering and addressing biases in diffusion models) at the #CVPR2024 workshop on fair, data-efficient, and trusted computer vision https://lnkd.in/e65xVnJu Next was the 3rd explainable AI for computer vision workshop at CVPR. I particularly liked the talks by Bernt Schiele (inherent interpretability for deep learning in computer vision) and Tim Miller (human-centered counterfactual explanations for image classification) https://lnkd.in/e5gAgZ5d Last was the book "Queer Career: Sexuality and Work in Modern America" by Margot Canaday. Canaday provides a compelling look at the last ~100 years of sexuality and work in America, documenting with archival evidence and interviews the evolution of how LGBTQ+ people navigated their careers and drove changes to organizations and society as a whole. The heartbreaking choices people had to make in the past (and many transgender people still have to choose today) between taking low paying, precarious jobs where they could be themselves vs. careers almost necessarily capped by social norms that were nearly impossible to navigate, was sobering. This book shines when connecting different time periods as well as Canaday's stunning, rich examination of the "Lavender Scare" period's bureaucratic machinery and counter-activism. The end of the book engages in a lot of speculation about the roots of current corporate support of the LGBTQ+ community without much evidence, and probably would be stronger without those sections. Still, even the sections covering the last few decades provided fascinating insight into how the tech sector, starting with Lotus and Bell Labs, in a limited way pushed the societal conversation around equal rights forward. Overall this book is necessary reading for those hoping to understand work today and in the past, and the power (and limits) of organizations and individuals to create a more just society. Highly recommend https://lnkd.in/eNejm2zM

Hello from the other side! DeepL's 2024 Global Company Event was absolutely amazing for many reasons- the location, the weather, the inspiring keynote talks, of course the awesome people. But the standout for me was my first ever in-person Lightning Talk on the LGBTQ+ topics which are very close to my heart, and I am really quite emotional about how well it went. Setting up, I was a total mess, shaky hands, hiccups, talking at n+1 miles an hour (think how fast I usually talk, then speed it up 1.5x for nerves). The more the room filled up, the more nervous I got- especially when our CPO, CLO, CRO and Chief of Staff walked in! But my awesome colleagues from PROUD-AI and People Ops were quick to fill up the first row with friendly, familiar faces so I could just focus on them. Once I actually got into the topic- wow, what a great atmosphere. All kinds of people in the room shared their experiences with coming out, having to re-confirm and defend their identities, the way they identify themselves visually to other members of the community. All my nerves were replaced by absolute gratitude, not only for the individuals who shared their experiences, but for the safe environment DeepL has created and nurtured for us to have this kind of conversation. Not only are we able to have these conversations in safety, but they are being listened to by the people at the very top, who genuinely care. That, to me, is something very rare and special in the workplace, and long may it continue. Excited to see what PROUD-AI can do next with this kind of support and enthusiasm! #outatwork #lgbtcareers #pride

Alice, your knowledge of Trust in Safety is such that my attempted curve balls got knocked out of the park as if they were softballs! But I might have fluffed that Baseball metaphor because despite what I tell Matthew Soeth, I'm not actually a baseball expert.
