This spectrum showcases the diverse nature of autism, emphasizing that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to understanding or managing it. The unique experiences and skills of autistic individuals showcase the multifaceted nature of the autism community, highlighting the fact that diversity exists within the autism spectrum. Each person's autism affects them differently, and their specific talents, interests, and struggles reflect this variability. The diverse manifestations of autism among individuals call for a nuanced and personalized approach to support and inclusion. Understanding that one person's autism may differ significantly from another's allows for a more empathetic and inclusive mindset. It implies understanding each person as an individual and tailoring support and accommodations to their specific needs, rather than adopting a one-dimensional view of autism. Accepting the diversity within diversity also challenges societal norms and encourages inclusivity and representation in various realms, including the workplace. It demands a shift in mindset and practices to create an accepting and welcoming environment, free from discrimination and stereotypes. From 2020 to 2022, Octava Foundation had the opportunity to support a study led by NUHS to study the effectiveness of an autism screening tool, to identify children who potentially could be on the autism spectrum. Following this study, the screening tool, the M-CHAT-R/F questionnaire is currently offered as part of the routine 18-month childhood developmental screening in all the seven polyclinics under NUP.   The study was successfully published in a leading peer-reviewed international scientific journal, Autism, and picked up by news channels recently, highlighting the tool's performance in local polyclinics: a 5-10 minute checklist for caregivers who bring their toddlers in on their developmental check-up, can detect children at higher likelihood for autism with about 90% accuracy.   With the tool facilitating systematic screening and earlier detection, more children on the autism spectrum could receive help at a crucial period of their development - to hone skills for language and cognition, which will benefit their later years at school, at employment, and at life.    Proving the local effectiveness of this checklist has led to successful adoption at these polyclinics, thus impacting lives of persons on the autism spectrum which stands at about 1% of our population. In updated U.S. autism bill, Congress calls for funding boost, expanded scope. From the recent Transmitter article: Key among other proposed updates is language that paves the way for more inclusive autism research. Celebrating World Autism Awareness Day ( 2nd April) is just one of many moments that bring awareness to the opportunities we all have for growth and increased understanding of the tremendous value people who are #neurodivergent bring to our company, our communities and our clients. The fact is, we’re ALL neurodiverse because our brains work differently from one person to the next; neurodiversity describes natural variations in the human brain and the differences in the way individuals think, learn, process and behave. These unique ways of thinking help us bring new perspectives to the table and see the world and address challenges in different ways. By embracing neurodiversity and focusing on #neuroinclusion, we lean into people’s strengths and enable everyone to contribute in meaningful and authentic ways. While 80% of people are considered to be “neurotypical,” up to 20% of people are expected to be “neurodivergent” in some form (with or without a formal diagnosis). Those with a #neurodifference — like autism, dyslexia, ADHD or dyspraxia, are just a few examples — often learn and think in different ways. But it’s important to remember that different doesn’t mean “wrong” or “abnormal.” It simply means different — and that’s a good thing. When we have open conversations about our differences, we increase our understanding, build trust and break down barriers. This helps create an inclusive environment where everyone feels a sense of #belonging and can thrive. Our commitment to neurodiversity starts at the top with our Global Disability and Neurodiversity Inclusion Council, which defines priorities, measures progress and offers support across our company. We provide accommodations for people to easily access assistive technology, flexible work arrangements and more through our Accommodation Support Tool. And through our Accessibility Centers around the world, we’re providing a space where people can interact with accessible technology to help determine which tools can positively impact productivity. We’ve also taken steps to increase opportunities for learning through our Allyship workshops and programs. From a neurodiversity perspective, it means understanding everyone’s individual strengths and leaning into them; accepting the differences in people’s style of socializing and communicating; and asking each person what they need to unlock their potential — and then helping provide that for them.

World Autism Awareness Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism, celebrate the talents of those with autism, and highlight the need for all individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder to lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society. Celebrating World Autism Awareness Day can involve various activities and actions to support the autism community, raise awareness, and promote inclusion and understanding. Here are some ways you can participate: 1. Wear Blue: Participate in the "Light It Up Blue" campaign by wearing blue clothing or accessories. 2. Share Stories: Share stories and experiences of individuals with autism and their families on social media. 3. Support Autism Organizations: Donate to or volunteer with organizations that support individuals with autism and their families. 4. Advocate for Policies: Advocate for policies and initiatives that support individuals with autism and their families. 5. Create an Inclusive Environment: Strive to create an inclusive environment in your community, workplace, and schools where individuals with autism are supported. By participating in World Autism Awareness Day, you contribute to a global movement towards acceptance, understanding, and inclusion for all individuals with autism.

I have a dream that one day, Autism Acceptance Week will evolve into Autism Celebration Week. A week not just marked on calendars for awareness, but a time when communities across the globe unite in jubilant celebration of the diverse minds and talents within the autism spectrum. I dream of a world where we don't just accept but celebrate the differences, recognising that every individual on the spectrum brings a unique perspective that enriches our society. A world where the narrative shifts from one of deficits and challenges to one of strengths and achievements. I envision schools and workplaces not merely making accommodations but actively seeking out and embracing neurodiverse individuals for their unique contributions. I see media that doesn’t just tell stories of struggle, but also of triumph, creativity, and unparalleled innovation brought about by those whose minds see the world through a different lens. In this dream, support systems are not just about helping those on the spectrum cope but about empowering them to thrive, to lead, and to shine in their own extraordinary ways. It’s a world where parents don't fear what the future holds for their child but are excited about the endless possibilities. I dream of communities coming together, not out of obligation, but out of genuine desire to learn from and with people on the autism spectrum. A time when we all acknowledge the incredible value of neurodiversity, understanding that a society that truly embraces all its members, in all their varied human glory, is the richest society of all. And as we celebrate, let it be a testament to how far we have come in understanding, supporting, and valuing each individual for who they are. Let Autism Celebration Week be a beacon of hope, a source of pride, and a milestone of how inclusivity can bring out the best in humanity. This is my dream.
