As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, I can't help but reflect on my time as a teacher and how much the landscape of education continues to change and evolve. Teaching isn't just about delivering lessons; it's about nurturing young minds, fostering creativity, and guiding future leaders. To all the teachers out there, I want to acknowledge the immense dedication and hard work you put in every day. Contrary to popular belief, summers off are often filled with planning, professional development, and preparing for the next school year. The workload is condensed into eight intense months that demand your expertise, empathy, and tireless commitment to student success. It's disheartening to see the current state of education in our country. We talk about the future citizens of America, yet we struggle to provide fair wages and support to those who shape these future leaders. The focus on test scores often overshadows the importance of holistic education, where students thrive not just academically but also as compassionate, curious, and resilient individuals. As we celebrate teachers this week, let's also reflect on how we can better support and uplift the education system. Our teachers deserve more than just appreciation; they deserve fair compensation, resources, and a system that prioritizes student well-being over standardized metrics. Thank you to all the educators who continue to make a difference in the lives of our children and the future of our nation. #TeacherAppreciationWeek #Education #SupportTeachers #FutureLeaders #ThankATeacher

Is Year-Round Schooling an Effective Measure Against Summer Learning Loss? According to the California Department of Education (2023), year-round education may positively affect student achievement, especially for disadvantaged students. Shorter, more frequent breaks minimize the loss of information retention during the summer months. Also, there are more enrichment opportunities for students during the breaks. In this week's video, we'll discuss the benefits of Year-Round Schooling and whether it is an effective measure against summer learning loss. #EducationalLeader, Kim “When students are led well, they learn well.” The views shared in the Educational Leadership Moment are solely mine and do not reflect the positions of my employer or any entity within the local, state, or federal government sectors. #Leadership #Education

In a recent Pew Research Center survey of 2,531 K-12 teachers, a majority (51%) of teachers shared that the #1 thing they want people to know is how hard teaching is. We know this to be true from our vantage point of preparing and supporting new teachers, and we can’t emphasize it enough. Teaching is deeply intellectual and relational work. One of the key tenets of our vision for a well-prepared teacher is someone who embraces the deep complexity of teaching. In the current climate, this notion has gotten increasingly difficult. But in our work with partners over the years to support aspiring teachers’ preparation for the classroom and to advocate for the policy conditions that enable them and their future students to thrive, we’re also creating bright spots that are contributing to equity-centered progress. In the states and communities where we work: 🌳 More aspiring teachers of diverse backgrounds are able to access affordable, quality pathways into teaching that are responsive to their needs and life circumstances 🧑🏫 More ed-prep programs, and partnering school districts, are modeling and teaching instructional practices grounded in a scientific understanding of how students learn – practices that support teachers to know how to engage all students in rigorous and affirming learning experiences 💡More new teachers are coming into the classroom with ample early and integrated school-based practice experiences like tutoring and apprenticeships that help them manage expectations and become better-prepared mentally, emotionally, and intellectually for the classroom. This #TeacherAppreciationWeek, we celebrate new and aspiring teachers who are boldly embracing the deep complexity of teaching – and redefining the narrative of what’s possible for the future of teaching.

This Teacher Appreciation Week, we celebrate educators who go above and beyond. Today, we highlight the incredible story of Larry Thornton and a teacher who changed his life - Miss Nichols. Miss Nichols, Larry's senior English teacher, saw a spark in him beyond words. While a report on John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" might seem like a typical assignment, for Larry, it unlocked a hidden talent – art. Miss Nichols recognized this and nurtured it, giving him a chance to express himself on the school bulletin board. This simple act ignited a sense of purpose and accomplishment in Larry. But Miss Nichols' impact extended far beyond the classroom. In a time when racial barriers were high, she invited Larry into her home, a gesture of acceptance that shattered boundaries. She treated him with respect and dignity, even offering him meals from her finest china and crystal. Most importantly, Miss Nichols saw a future for Larry that no one else had dared to imagine. She planted the seed of possibility, encouraging him to pursue college, a path far outside his perceived limitations. Larry left Miss Nichols' home feeling empowered, with a newfound vision for himself. Her guidance became the foundation for a life filled with opportunities he could only dream of. This Teacher Appreciation Week, let's celebrate educators like Miss Nichols. They see the potential hidden within each student, offering encouragement and guidance that can shape a future. To all the teachers out there- Thank you for daring to see the "Why Not Win" in every student. Your impact is immeasurable. Share your own story of a teacher who made a difference in your life! #TeacherAppreciationWeek #WhyNotWin #EducatorsMakeADifference

SEEKING SUCCESS - PART 3 Having read countless K-12 school district mission statements it is clear that most are cumbersome expressions of academic excellence which are often combined with an expectation for exceptional teaching effort. Rarely do they challenge the entire workforce to become mission focused. They do not enable everyone to see their role in setting the stage for student learning. Most of the time people cannot accurately repeat their district’s mission statement or speak to its day-to-day relevance. At the risk of being presumptive, I believe the mission of every K-12 school district can be stated in one sentence. “Each day we will create the right conditions for learning.” Every employee has a role to play in accomplishing this. The leadership team, Board, and community have the collective responsibility to determine their definition of “right” in relation to creating the conditions for their students to learn.

Dear Educators, As we embark on this year’s Teacher Appreciation Week, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact that educators have on shaping the future, and making schools successful by making an impact on children. This week isn't just a token gesture; it's a testament to the tireless dedication and unwavering passion that teachers bring to their classrooms every single day. Now, more than ever, it's crucial that we take the time to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contributions of our educators. Teacher Appreciation Week isn't just about handing out apples or coffee mugs adorned with inspirational quotes. It's about recognizing the immense sacrifices that teachers make, often going above and beyond their job descriptions to ensure that every student receives a quality education. So why is it so important to acknowledge teachers publicly? Check out my reasons why on the @leadership.with.a.latte blog. https://wix.to/2Y51tbI #newblogpost
