I recently reposted a post from Gary Izunwa, founder of Tangent, who makes employee referrals accessible to everyone, not just the privileged few with the best networks. The post reflected on the idea that recruiting for ‘culture fit’ almost always leads to less social mobility. It's essentially code for “if you’re not like us, we don’t want you”. Instead, employers should recruit for ‘culture add’. I couldn't agree more with this point. Over the last few months, I have been working predominantly with British African established family offices and private equity firms, supporting them in various ways, one of the most notable being with the growth of their team. It has not once been difficult for me to source diverse candidates for these roles, which has made me think a lot about why so many financial institutions struggle.  I’ve come to the conclusion ultimately, you never going to hire a diverse team if the person leading the hiring looks, sounds, and has the same background as you. Period. Using a platform like Tangent or bringing in a recruiter or consultant who doesn't look, sound, speak, or have the same degree/consulting background as you/the hiring manager, can ensure you are truly hiring diversely.
