Currently, surveying technology has reached an incredible level of advancement 🚀, although sometimes the terrain presents us with challenging obstacles. Recently, I had the opportunity to work on a project requiring the measurement of 6,000 points in a densely wooded forest 🌳 🌲 . Even the latest GNSS receivers reach their limits in such conditions, prompting me to resort to traditional yet extremely precise surveying instruments, such as theodolites. Why? The dense forest makes satellite signals struggle to penetrate, complicating the precise determination of location. In such conditions, theodolites become invaluable tools, enabling us to accurately measure the terrain, even in hard-to-reach places. It's fascinating how, at times, proven "old" surveying methods remain essential in the face of modern challenges. In surveying, as in life, the diversity of tools is crucial for achieving the highest precision. Surveyor Alex Lyall pilots our mighty Geoswath Survey Vessel - we sat down with Alex to ask him about it's capabilities. Q: What in your opinion makes the Geoswath our most in demand item of survey equipment? A: The GeoSwath #sonar is an #interferometric #multibeam , which is quite similar to a traditional multibeam, however has key differences, which I think make it great for us and also for our clients, for the applications of surveying inland waterways, which we specialise in. The sonar has a 240 degrees swath and can cover up to about 12 times the water depth. 💡 Also, the data density is a lot higher than a traditional multibeam and our system, which is 250 kHz, has a resolution of 3 millimeters vertically, and a resolution of 12 mm laterally. So it gives our clients a rich data set of the riverbed. Alongside the GeoSwath, we have an SBG Equinox inertial navigation system and linked with the RTK GNSS gives us accuracies of 10 mm. The INS records precisely the heave, pitch, and roll, which allows us to compensate the motion within the data set. It also allows us, if we lose GNSS position under tree covers or bridges, we can post-process the INS data to create a smooth best estimate trajectory. I believe all of this allows us to provide data in challenging environments, which I think our clients appreciate." 💡 Want to know more?
