Over 30 countries pledged support for #Ukraine’s cultural sector at the UNESCO conference in #Vilnius. This is a huge step forwards to safeguard Ukraine’s rich cultural heritage. The 10 concrete proposals for the reconstruction of Ukraine discussed by Ukrainian museums a week ago at the conference in Berlin “From crisis to future. New responsibilities for museums in Ukraine” were introduced in the UNESCO conference and will accompany the ongoing international support. The next step will be the Ukraine Recovery Conference next week in #Berlin where culture now will be given a bigger place. Culture is an indispensable part of the future of Ukraine. This is why Russia, in effort to re-colonalize Ukraine, continues to systematically destroy and rob sites of cultural heritage. Ukraine has much to contribute to Europe’s cultural heritage. "The symposium aims to examine the relationships between the publics and peace-building processes in contested cities. (...) The island in general and Nicosia, a divided European capital with a prolonged history of conflict, internal refugees' displacements, migration and tourist flows, economic fluctuations, and rapid, often abrupt urban transformations, serve as an ideal laboratory to explore, unravel, and question public space development in unstable and contested contexts. The local urban context provides a valuable case study and can unveil the complexity of all the factors that condition the various forms of public space in contemporary contested, continuously transformed contexts."

Exhibition: China seen from Europe, 16th-19th century On display until March 2, at the National Library of Portugal, Gallery – Floor 2 (Campo Grande, 83, Lisbon) – Free Entry. Europe came to know China better, especially during the late Middle Ages, through the relationships created with Christian merchants and missionaries. However, it was at the beginning of the 16th century, within the framework of Portuguese maritime expansion, that a more constant presence of Europeans on the Chinese coasts allowed for a gradually more complete knowledge of China. Currently, Ukraine does not have a strategy for digitizing cultural heritage. There are no approved standards and rules at the legislative level that museums can follow. The international standards used in digitization work still need to be adapted to Ukrainian realities. One of the main challenges in digitization is the lack of a regulated electronic inventory system for museum artifacts. The lack of electronic records has become even more critical during the war. As of today, 107 museums from all parts of #Ukraine are represented on our platform. Russian aggression also means destroying Ukrainian culture and national identity. What is important at this point is planning the #future for Ukrainian #museums, which are one of the elements of Ukraine's reconstruction. Museums are an indispensable part of an open society – not only to preserve the past in all its diversity, but at least as much to reflect present experiences and to prepare the future of our societies. How would you display your country in an international exhibition? This question became a particularly salient one for new states as they sought to showcase their independent statehood to the rest of the world. The Israeli pavillion at Expo Montreal in 1967 became a renowned success. Designed under the leadership of pioneering architect Arieh Sharon, the pavillion included an exhibition area where one of the original Dead Sea Scrolls was put on display, a dark room describing the Holocaust and a bright room that described the birth of Israel. https://lnkd.in/dFMvVUms My forthcoming book chapter on the performative aspects of new statehood in international society will include this and other displays by new states.
