By 2030, the U.S. Census estimates that all 76.4 million Baby Boomers will be 65 or older 📊 That’s a staggering number. At the same time, birth rates are at a record low. 📉 This demographic shift is creating an unprecedented demand for assisted living care. But here’s the challenge: the current infrastructure isn’t equipped to handle it. Many facilities are outdated. The level of care often falls short of what our aging population deserves. Today, according to the U.S. Census, seniors are the fastest-growing age group, representing 17% of the U.S. population. In Florida, that percentage sits at 21.6% and is projected to hit 25% in 2030. As the percentage of aging Americans grows, researchers at Florida State University are seizing opportunities the trend affords. Thanks to an emphasis on age-related research that began decades ago, FSU is now home to a sprawling, interdisciplinary research infrastructure spanning colleges and departments that facilitates and fuels faculty collaboration in the field. That robust network of institutes, centers, partnerships, and initiatives related to healthy aging, some of which are housed in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, has made FSU a national leader in the field.

As Older Americans Month draws to a close, we encourage you to reflect on the future of aging in the United States. Our shifting demographics have the potential to fundamentally change sectors of our society. By 2034, the U.S. Census predicts – for the first time ever – there will be more adults over 65 than children under 18. With the right planning and implementation, these demographic changes can elevate the status of older Americans and support healthy aging and quality of life for millions. In many parts of the country, our current infrastructure requires significant change to provide the range of services needed for the increasingly diverse population of older adults, people with disabilities, and their caregivers. Additionally, many states are experiencing population reduction through birth rates and migration below the replacement percentage. We must adapt to these changes over the next few years or lose significant momentum currently experienced by the health and human services industry. States can unlock the potential of their public, private, and non-profit sectors with a Multisector Plan for Aging (MPA), a strategic plan that addresses the challenges and harnesses the power of collaboration among disparate groups that serve our older adults. An MPA can promote healthy aging, independent living, and social engagement, while also addressing issues related to healthcare, housing, and other social determinants of health. Regardless of industry, multisector collaboration is key to developing a coordinated system of high-quality care and support services that cater to the unique character of our older adults.   At Guidehouse, we're excited to connect and collaborate on these opportunities, leveraging our expertise and insights to drive meaningful change for this cause. "The average American retires at age 62— not old enough to qualify for Medicare but still four decades deep in the workforce. As previously reported by USA TODAY, the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies found a five-year gap, 67 and 62, between when older workers expect to retire vs when they actually retire. "Older Americans who are retired or nearing retirement—those 65 and older—make up 18% of the population, a total of 62 million adults, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. "Where does America's retired population live in the U.S.? Census Bureau data gives insight into where older generations call home: "Maine is home to the oldest population on average, followed by Puerto Rico, New Hampshire, Vermont, West Virginia and Florida. "The median age group in Maine is 45.1— 43.9 for men and 46.4 for women. Although mid 40's is not nearly close to the standard 'retirement age,' it's about 6 years older than the median age of all Americans, according to Census Bureau data. "Utah is home to the youngest population on average, with the average man aged 31.4 and the average woman aged 32.7." #retirementcommunity

ACL Releases 2023 Profile of Older Americans The Profile of Older Americans is a summary of the available statistics related to the older population in the United States. Principal sources of data are the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Center for Health Statistics, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Profile illustrates the shifting demographics of Americans 65 and older. It includes key topic areas such as future population growth, marital status, living arrangements, income, employment, and health. Highlights from the Profile • Of older adults 65 and older living in the community, 59% lived with their spouse/partner in 2023. About 28% lived alone. • States with the highest percentage of populations 65 and older in 2022 were Maine, Florida, Vermont, and West Virginia. • In 2023, 11.2 million Americans age 65 and older were in the labor force (working or actively seeking work). It's little surprise that America is rapidly getting older — but now that we're at the brink of that demographic shift's major consequences, we're still completely unprepared.
