The goal in the next few years will be to master upheavals and digital disruption in the film industry.💪🎬 🙋From my point of view: 💡Innovation is the key word for upcoming and already existing challenges! I am talking about the increase of digital streaming services and how differently we consume media nowadays. 📲 The traditional film industry is under pressure because they have to change significantly in order to be still appealing to their audience.👥🎬 These changes are obvious at the box office which shows declining income.💰❌ The need for innovation has never been greater❗ But we, as filmmakers, shouldn't think of it as an impossible challenge.🙅 We should look at it as a unique opportunity to prove once again the irreplaceability of cinema.☝️ Once again?🧐 Yes, this is not the first time that cinema has competition.⚔️ “The film industry believed that the greatest threat to its continued success was posed by television (...).” ( Cook, David A; Skla, Robert. 2024. History of film) 📺 (https://buff.ly/3R3myjW) Back then in the 1950s the film industry had two advantages in comparison to the increasingly popular television: ➡️Wide-screen format🎞️ ➡️Color 🖼️ The time of impressive monumental films or also called blockbusters began, which amazed the audience and attracted masses to the cinema.🤯 As filmmakers, we always have to find new ways to connect with our audiences. Embracing digital platforms can offer creative possibilities, but it also requires rethinking our strategies and storytelling techniques.🧠🤔 Let's engage in a dialogue about how we can use the power of digital transformation to keep the magic of cinema alive.🗣️ How are you feeling about this change? Share your experiences and insights below! 🎥🌐 #FilmIndustry #DigitalTransformation #StreamingServices #BoxOffice #InnovationInCinema #FilmHistory #MagicofCinema #Blockbusters #DigitalStreaming

Understanding Why Many Films Have a Dark Aesthetic Today In recent years, many films have embraced a dark aesthetic, often characterized by muted tones, shadowy lighting, and somber themes. This trend reflects a desire to explore deeper, more complex narratives where the visual style enhances the emotional intensity and realism of the story. Darker visuals often convey tension, moral ambiguity, or psychological depth, resonating with modern audiences seeking thought-provoking cinema. The shift also highlights filmmakers' artistic choice to break away from traditional, vibrant palettes, offering a more nuanced and immersive experience. 🎥🌑 #DarkAesthetic #ModernCinema #VisualStorytelling #FilmTrends #CinematicStyle https://lnkd.in/dP2-pa_K

This took so much more effort than I naively expected it to take. I spent over a year working on this tutorial on the intricacies of white balancing within a Virtual Production environment. Thanks so much to Erik Weaver and University of Southern California ETC! One thing I did was test 8 different tiles with 5 different cameras to show that NO SCREEN ever appears in camera as metered, no matter how good a meter or calibration was done. (see attached picture in the comment section—white field is d65 video white on your screen, the main circles are what the actual meter reading color would be, and the inner pie pieces are how the camera "sees" that screen when set to 6504K.) This has been my consistent experience in VP stages for 5 years. I then discuss the different ways to work with this, and whys. Please feel free to take a look and be informed about a lot of these realities you may not have thought about and how to tackle them, especially if you don't have an ILM or WETA behind you taking care of these details without you even realizing. https://lnkd.in/gT6zhCCu HUGE thanks to David-Jean Schweitzer, soc for donating his Alexa35 for use! Tucker Downs and Ritchie Argue did all the metering and validation. Fuse Technical Group generously also provided their stage for use. #virtualproduction #whitebalancing
ETC RELEASES WHITE BALANCING TUTORIAL FOR VIRTUAL PRODUCTION ETC@USC has posted a tutorial that offers best practices for white balancing during production on a curved wall LED volume stage. Due to the growing number of LED volume and backing wall applications emerging worldwide, many critical color calibration issues have resulted. The informative tutorial — authored by cinematographer Tim Kang from Aputure with support from producer Erik Weaver from ETC and the ICVFX working group — provides cinematographers and production teams with a simple graphical guide that breaks down the problems between the camera and its LED wall perception while specifying different means to implement solutions. The Virtual Production White Balancing Tutorial is now available on the ETC site. Tim Kang https://lnkd.in/gGXfEQR7

Here's an advert I wish I made: GUINNESS "SURFER" ...and this why it's widely regarded as the best advert of all time: Powerful Visuals and Cinematography: The ad’s stunning black-and-white cinematography, featuring a dramatic scene of surfers waiting for the perfect wave, set against huge, crashing waves with horse-like forms, captured viewers’ imaginations. The surreal imagery of the horses emerging from the waves became an instantly memorable visual metaphor for the power of nature and human determination. Compelling Storytelling and Emotion: “Surfer” tells a simple yet profound story about patience, perseverance, and reward. It mirrors the brewing process of Guinness, which takes time to create, much like the surfers who wait for the perfect wave. This narrative of delayed gratification resonated emotionally with audiences, making the message more meaningful. Unique Metaphor and Symbolism: The ad’s metaphor—waiting for the perfect wave and the satisfaction that comes with it—connects directly to the experience of drinking Guinness, which also requires patience as you wait for the pint to settle before drinking. This metaphor reinforced Guinness’ brand message of quality and craftsmanship. Memorable Music and Sound: The soundtrack, “Phat Planet” by Leftfield, combined with the rhythmic pounding of the waves, elevated the tension and excitement of the ad. The music was hypnotic and perfectly matched the dramatic visuals, making it stick in the minds of viewers long after the commercial ended. Brand Alignment with Boldness and Craftsmanship: Guinness has long marketed itself as more than just a beer, but as an experience, and “Surfer” reinforced the brand’s identity as something worth waiting for. The ad’s bold and artistic execution aligned with Guinness’ reputation for crafting ads with depth and sophistication, which appealed to viewers’ sense of quality and style. Cultural and Artistic Impact: Directed by Jonathan Glazer, the ad was groundbreaking for its time, pushing the boundaries of what a commercial could be by blending art, film, and marketing. Its unconventional narrative and artistic flair made it a cultural phenomenon, influencing not only future ads but also how people talked about advertising as a medium. Overall, Guinness “Surfer” became iconic because it wasn’t just selling a product—it created an emotional, visual, and artistic experience that transcended traditional advertising. #productioncompany #production #videoproduction #producer #productionhouse #advertising #video #filming #productions #commercial #marketing #branding #digital #marketingstrategy #advertisingagency #creative #advertisement #content

From rural naïveté to urban discontent: Framing post-apartheid South African film identities 🎞 📽 🎦 "This article summarises the filmic representations of the rural and urban landscapes in their various forms and how these representations indicate the various kinds of South African identities that are imbued in a sample of 20 years of local cinema. The authors analyse the ‘structural basis of the images and recurring motifs reflected in local South African cinema’ in terms of rural and urban landscapes. Tomaselli posed a similar question for Afrikaans-language made between 1965 and 1980, while the current paper examines a 20 year Afrikaans film sample made between 1994 and 2014. The interaction between the depicted environment and identity construction is most evident in the cinematic choices of the filmmakers. Johannesburg and Cape Town have gained various guises through urban narratives set within the gangster and crime genre, such as Jerusalema, Cold Harbour and Four Corners, whilst the rural landscape is explored extensively in Afrikaans romance films such as Platteland, Vrou Soek Boer and Leading Lady. The conclusion is that whilst most of the Afrikaans films of the last 20 years represent a yearning for the ‘innocent pastoral years’ of their ancestors, there are exceptions to the rule, such as Katinka Heyns’ film, Paljas. Keywords: Identity; Landscape; Representation; Rural; Urban; South African Cinema. Films, similarly to other media forms, carry historical messages through their aesthetics, ‘background, setting, language and incidental details’ (Browne 1983: 33). The South African landscape is multi-layered, complex and has been contested, investigated and explored in various representational and narrative forms. Painting, photography and cinematography have been used extensively to understand the places or settings of our narratives (Jansen van Vuuren and Verster 2015: 63). It is relevant to consider notions of ideology and identity construction in terms of the visual depictions of South African environments, as audiences respond to certain images presented to them, and fashion their identities according to these media discourses (Tomaselli 2006a: 96). Here, we argue that the filmic representations of the rural and urban landscapes in post-apartheid cinema reflect the various kinds of South African identities as imagined by the director." 🎬 Exploring the Stunning Cinematography of Netflix's "Ripley" (2024) If you're passionate about cinematography and photography and haven't yet seen the “Ripley” TV mini-series on Netflix (2024), then you should grab a huge bucket of popcorn and buckle up for a feast of insanely captivating shots. You could forget the plot and the acting (though I wouldn’t advise it, as both are of superb quality) and focus solely on the visuals. These alone make "Ripley" a standalone piece of art and a visual masterpiece deserving of accolades for its exceptional cinematography. Set against lush, evocative backdrops, the series brings to life the suspenseful tale of Tom Ripley with rich, detailed visuals that enhance the storytelling. 👌 🏆Each frame is meticulously crafted, using lighting and camera angles to amplify the psychological depth and thrilling undertones of the narrative. The cinematography not only captivates but also immerses viewers into Tom's complex world, blending luxurious European landscapes with the tense, foreboding atmosphere of Ripley's adventures. Whether it's the shadowy alleys or the sunlit vistas, the visual treatment of "Ripley" adds an integral layer of intrigue and elegance that makes the series a must-watch. 🎓What lessons should we learn from this masterpiece that we can apply in AI filmmaking? Plenty, for sure, but here’s one takeaway. When it comes to the language we use to tell a story and evoke emotions, AI filmmaking isn’t much different from traditional cinematography. It still revolves around composition, framing, lighting, choice of camera and lens, camera movement, and editing. There are no shortcuts here—if we want our AI-generated films to captivate, we need to master the principles of filmmaking as an art, regardless of whether we use traditional film equipment or AI tools to create our visuals. 🎥✨ #Ripley #Netflix #Cinematography #TVSeries #VisualStorytelling #AIFilmmaking #FilmArtAI #AIVideo
