Good news for active travel in England from Active Travel England . Especially as allocations of Capability funding are for all Highways authorities (except London which is funded differently). Some much-needed trials are being funded/extended too in specific places - eg side street ‘zebras’, e-bike loans and National Parks. Will be good to see how these get on and hopefully expand in future years to include the rest of the country. As a big advocate of active travel here in our ‘no cities but lots of towns and villages’ county of North Northants, I’m used to seeing announcements for great active travel trials elsewhere and always wondering ‘when will we get that?’. The trial for National Parks is great to see although it won’t directly benefit us here yet as we have none. Instead we have our much-loved ‘country parks’ which also could really do with investment in access opportunities eg safe walk/cycle routes to get there (as well as public transport/DRT but that’s another story). Hopefully success with the National Parks trial will lead to similar investments in access to our and others’ parklands. Good for #physicalhealth and #carbonreduction but also of course for #mentalwellbeing.
