Our Nurture Group focuses on the resilience of children by teaching them to control their emotions, process the impact of trauma, and to develop thriving relationships. Foster Kinship’s Nurture Group is a 2-hour event, hosted twice a month, for up to 6 children between 4 to 10 years old. The curriculum is grounded in Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) — an evidence-based practice specifically focused on empowering and connecting children who have experienced trauma. The curriculum also incorporates Jude Cassidy’s (2001) Four Necessary Skills for Healthy Relationships. Our trauma-informed childcare specialists teach these skills in a fun and safe environment by using the book, "Riley the Brave," which explains how trauma impacts the brain and how to create relationships with safe adults. Notably, this book teaches neuroscience in an accessible manner and provides concrete skills for caregivers to implement. Meet Megan, a Certified Child Life Specialist. “As a CCLS, being able to assess and meet children where they are and work with them through their worries and fears is an invaluable trait. Advocacy, play, preparation, education, and support are a few of the ways we can help promote positive coping skills in children. These learned skills are transferable, whether in or out of the hospital (and to be honest, I think that is a piece of child life that often gets overlooked). Once a child discovers what they need in their ‘coping toolbox’ they can take that ‘toolbox’ to their doctor’s appointments, dental visits, and even when meeting new friends or trying a new hobby. There are so many uncertainties that may follow a family through their child’s hospital admission, but allowing the opportunity for kids to be kids should always be certain. enCourage Kids Foundation shows up for these families by allowing kids to be kids. Their Bears programs may seem small to the outside world, but a Certified Child Life Specialist knows this program’s impact. A teddy bear may seem like “just” a soft and cuddly stuffy, but as a CCLS I know that it’s not just a bear; that’s an opportunity for connection. An opportunity to use the teddy bear to teach, prepare, play, and support. An opportunity to teach about their diagnosis or injury. An opportunity to prepare that child for what they can expect. An opportunity to let a child lead the conversation through play. An opportunity to support the child, to help reduce anxiety, and to work through worries. An opportunity to answer lingering questions that the child might still have. It is more than just a teddy bear. It’s the opportunity for mastery and control.” To support child life specialists like Megan and the hospitalized children they serve, donate today. https://lnkd.in/e9v4u2UX #childllifemonth #childrenshealth #childlifespecialist #childrenshospital #encouragekids #playtherapy

My daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia. What do I do now? Where do I go for support? When your child is diagnosed with dyslexia, it provides valuable information about their strengths and challenges, allowing you to seek the right support. Here are steps to take: Ask questions: Reach out to teachers, healthcare providers, and other parents to understand what dyslexia means for your child. Talk with your child: Discuss dyslexia openly at home, reassuring your child that it's not something to be ashamed of and doesn't reflect their intelligence. Know what comes next at school: If evaluated by the school, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) will be developed for support. Understand the IEP process and explore options if privately evaluated. Discover what helps: Learn about multisensory instruction to aid dyslexic children with reading and explore strategies for home. Connect with other families: Join communities like Understood's Wunder app to connect with parents facing similar challenges. Recognize strengths: While focusing on challenges, celebrate your child's strengths and accomplishments. Share success stories: Highlight individuals thriving with dyslexia to inspire and help your child see beyond the challenges. https://lnkd.in/gc3YhSF9 #dyslexiaawareness #StrengthsandWeaknesses #ReadingandWriting #DyslexiaSupport

Did you know that developmental disabilities are lifelong conditions that emerge during childhood and affect cognitive, physical, or behavioral functioning? This includes autism spectrum disorder (ASD), cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). 1 in 6 children have one or more developmental disabilities or other developmental delays. Despite progress in awareness and support, individuals with developmental disabilities still face stigma, discrimination, and barriers to inclusion in many aspects of life. At Positive Work, we are committed to helping create a more inclusive work landscape and society as a whole for those with developmental disabilities. Each person with a developmental disability is unique, with their own strengths, abilities, and potential for growth and contribution to society. ❤️ 💛 💙 Join us in our mission by following us on social media, signing up for our newsletter, and making a donation. https://lnkd.in/grb_QvJw Additionally, consider supporting other organizations dedicated to the developmental disability community, such as The Arc of the United States, National Down Syndrome Society, Easterseals, and Special Olympics. #developmentaldisabilities #disabilityinclusion #autismawareness #autism #downsyndrome #adhd #cerebralpalsy

"According to a recent report from the Boston Consulting Group, 77% of youth in South Carolina with a major depressive episode do not receive any mental health treatment. This is well above the national average of 60%. In 2021, leading organizations declared a National State of Emergency in children’s mental health. Additionally, in 2022, the mental health counselor-to-student ratio 2022 was 1:1,300 in South Carolina. Charleston Hope’s journey began in 2011 when executive director Emily Kerr brainstormed from her kitchen table how she could help enact real change. Since then, Charleston Hope has grown exponentially, thanks to the unwavering support of community members. This year alone, Charleston Hope expects to provide more than 1,000 hours of mental health support to students."
