This makes absolute sense and should be encouraged. Actually it contributes towards reduction of Co2 (textile industry being one of the most polluting industries) and therefore protects our planet and at the same time it’s a business that creates jobs.

Across Africa, there are quite a number of beliefs that we need to rethink. One of those is that thrifting is predominantly for the less privileged or the poor. Did you know that buying second hand items, is indeed sustainable practice? This is one area I look to invest resources in, in the very near future.  The Fashion Industry is indeed notorious for its contribution to textile waste; Accounting for 10% of annual global carbon emissions, estimated 20% of industrial waste water pollution worldwide, and 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year. While the linear approach in fashion needs to change with long term strategy that includes innovation, systematic re-thinking and multi-Industry collaboration; re-cycling and change of consumer psychology from ‘owning’ to ‘using clothes ‘can make a big difference. In Japan, the recycling and reuse of discarded clothing have historically been a small niche embraced by hipsters, driven more by fashion trends than environmental consciousness. Japanese also put hygiene as a priority, another reason why thrifting wasn’t on the list for consumers for long time. I am glad to see a shift occurring, with major brands like Uniqlo leading the efforts to promote the reuse and recycling of old clothes. According to the Ministry of the Environment, 34% of discarded clothing in Japan is recycled or reused, although this figure includes exports to developing countries, which often amounts to waste dumping in places like Africa and Myanmar. while progress is being made in Japan towards sustainable fashion practices, there remains a need for greater transparency and accountability in the recycling and reuse process to ensure that it truly benefits both the environment and communities worldwide.

The ‘Power of Positioning’ The is strong news for the Circular Economy and Sustainability. Intriguing to see how the textile and clothing industries progress further with regard to Innovation and Horizoning. But also a very clear example of the ‘Power of Positioning’ and Value refocus ‘Vintage v’s Second Hand’ It’s also helping to drive further that my children value what they have - on many levels.
