In this month's edition of Stroll Magazine, I shared three benefits of a #summer job for young people. Drawing on my own experience with #teenagers, three ways in which your #student can make the most of a seasonal work experience: 💰 Earn money and learn how to build a budget. A summer job could be the experience your teenager needs to open a bank account! 👥 Gain experience working with different types of people. Working with difficult customers, or alongside colleagues who have different work ethics can be a great skill-builder! 💼 Experience an industry or job that may inform a future career decision. A simple summer job may be either a stepping stone into a career path or the certainty your student needs to never do that job again. Read the full article, attached here -- and let me know what else you would add to a summer job "pro-tips" list!

It's time for our kids to get summer jobs! 🌞 Employers big and small are seeking reliable, dedicated young workers, while teens and young adults are eager to earn some cash. Summer jobs offer more than just a paycheck – they’re an incredible opportunity to learn and grow. I’ll never forget my own experience working for a small business owner during high school. Those Friday and Saturday nights, surrounded by his family, left a lasting impact on me. Parents, guide your teens and young adults toward opportunities with caring leaders. Here are tips to help them choose a workplace that values more than just a paycheck: - Ask About Leadership: Encourage them to inquire about the management style. - Consider Family-Owned or Small Businesses: These places often foster a sense of community and care. - Don’t Overlook Larger Businesses: Strong departmental teams at places like Target or local grocers like Lunds & Byerlys can also provide valuable experiences. - Check Reviews and Ask Around: Positive feedback about workplace culture is key. - Observe the Interview Process: A caring leader will show genuine interest in their goals. - Value Beyond the Paycheck: Encourage them to seek jobs with learning opportunities and mentors who invest in their growth. Have a great summer, everyone! 🌞👷♂️👷♀️

Springtime means that soon-to-be college grads are busy on the job hunt. As someone who has supported undergrads with the application & interview processes, and an employee with a diverse work history, I’ve compiled a list of “Top 3 non-negotiables for the job hunt.” I’ve experienced various roles in #highered, #directsales, #smallbusiness, and #freelance and I can assure you, not all employers and workplace cultures are created equal. To the students about to embark upon the transition into the job market, here are my three points to consider before accepting your first professional role: 1. OVERALL 🔄 FIT (just like your favorite pair of jeans, make sure everything about your potential employer is buttoned up and feels good from the inside-out) • mission, vision and core values align with your personal mantra • job description, responsibilities, and compensation are aligned with industry standards • learn what you can about the company’s leadership and their communication style 2. POSITIVE ➕ CULTURE What attributes are important to you in your daily environment? For me, these are the things I value within the space where I spend 40 hours per week⬇️ • Ability to create meaningful experiences (authenticity ➕ impact) • Recognition, reward and incentives for a job well done • Organization-wide trust (👋 regular communication!) 3. EMPLOYEE ✅ INVESTMENT (i.e. commitment to people as a whole person, rather than an expense) •Access to resources: mental, social, physical and financial health • Promote healthy work-life balance • Opportunities for growth (professional development, continuing education & career advancement) • Benefits (healthcare, retirement, childcare, etc) If you’ve hung with me this long, I’d love to hear your feedback on this topic 👂 While not all workplaces and professions are right for everyone, I strongly believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The best way to know yourself as an employee is to gain experience. It’s a big, incredible world 🌎 out there graduates, and we can’t wait for you to add more good to it! Cheers to education 🎓 now go put your knowledge to work! 📸 Western Illinois University graduation, circa 2009

Starting at a company or a position that is not a good fit is often viewed as a career misstep and I want to change that narrative. Dan's career origin story: My first job out of college was at a company that served as the middleman for getting tech hardware from suppliers to manufacturers of products like Fitbit. I was a "Product Manager & Supplier Marketing Specialist" which was total BS. I worked in a queue format matching up orders from manufacturers to suppliers. I absolutely hated it! This could be viewed as a career misstep but for me, it was an invaluable learning experience early on in my career. I hated going to work every day, my closest coworker by age was 10 years older than me, and the environment was "old school" AKA business casual with garbage coffee and a cube farm. At the time, I was making $54k/year which at the time wasn't bad for a recent grad but I was miserable. I left that job for a part-time internship at a digital marketing agency that paid $15/hour and it was the best decision I had ever made. I was so much happier, the culture was fantastic, I got to work on brands that I recognized, had amazing coworkers closer in age, I had a career path, and I was valued from day one! I had always told myself that money isn't everything and that I didn't want to base any of my career moves SOLELY on compensation. This changed my career trajectory and now I am forever grateful for that first job. I got to understand early on what it feels like to work for a crappy employer and at a company that doesn't care for you. I am much more grateful for employers who treat employees well and understand the value that comes beyond the paycheck. Don't get me wrong this does NOT replace proper compensation (go get paid y'all 🤑) but there is more to a happy employment situation than just your compensation. If anyone has questions about making bold career moves like this, my door is always open! It was a scary move but has paid dividends to me and I would like to help anyone else navigate a similar situation.

"Dry promotions" offer a new title and more responsibilities without the raise. It's a concept gaining traction, with 13% of employers considering it acceptable, a significant jump from six years ago. Here's the deal: Not every company can offer raises right now. So, should you accept a promotion without a raise? It's not a straightforward 'yes' or 'no.' A new title and expanded role can enrich your résumé and open future doors, offering long-term career benefits that might outweigh the immediate lack of financial reward. Yet, your instincts play a crucial role. Feeling undervalued or exploited? It might be time to explore new horizons. #promotion #careergrowth #employmentstrategies

Way to go Heaven on recently completing your first Summer Youth Work Experience program! Through this experience, she learned that she'd like to know more merchandising when looking towards her future. "I learned about pricing, money, and customer service. I also learned that I like working with 1 or 2 persons but (also) choosing to work by myself so I can do stuff quietly. I'm looking forward to working with LEAP next about applying and interviewing. And maybe working here (Burlington) part-time or somewhere else." We can't wait to continue assisting her as she pursues her goals! #YouthDisabilityEmployment, #DisabilityEmployment, #YouthEmployment, #Employment
