The first issue of #ThePatient 2024 is now available (Link in the comments) ·  Janine van Til et al. explore patient role preferences in health preference research (HPR). They suggest that considering patients' desired level of involvement in decision-making can enhance the relevance of HPR to shared decision-making processes, potentially leading to improved healthcare outcomes. ·   Riboulet et al. report a systematic review of patient preferences for #pharmacy services. They found cost, time, logistics, and pharmacists’ courtesy and skills were consistently cited as factors influencing patient preferences for pharmacy services. ·  Catherine Mease analyze summaries of #fda patient engagement sessions in patients with #raredisease.  The analysis revealed common experiences among rare disease patients across four dimensions: a lack of effective treatment options, certain physical symptoms, mental health challenges, and financial concerns.    ·  Nikki McCaffrey et al. find that popular, preference-based outcome measures such as the EuroQol EQ-5D-5L do not incorporate the most important, patient-valued, quality-of-life domains in the palliative and end-of-life settings. The authors highlight the need for tailored quality-of-life measures in palliative care, emphasizing the importance of social, spiritual, and emotional dimensions over longevity as patients approach life's end. ·   A study in #agedcare by Ratcliffe et al. reveals that most older residents with a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 24 or above can reliably self-complete the EQ-5D, a measure of health-related quality of life. However, for those with an MMSE score of 23 or below, self-completion may not be reliable, suggesting proxy assessment is recommended. Richard Norman ·   Janine Verstraete et al. investigated the HRQoL in #children reliant on breathing technology. The findings revealed that EQ-TIPS and EQ--Y- measures were successful in distinguishing between children with different clinical conditions, outperforming the PedsQL and PTHSI. The research also highlighted the significant effect of caregiving burden on caregivers' HRQoL, underscoring the importance of accounting for spillover effects. ·   Axel Mühlbacher et al. analyzed #heartfailure patients' preferences for monitoring systems. Using a best-worst scaling case, the research identified four classes of patients with varying preferences. Even with frequent monitoring, most classes preferred therapy options offering significant improvements in mobility, reduced mortality, and fewer hospitalizations. ·  In a study in renal cell carcinoma, #chinese patients preferred medications with better efficacy and lower out-of-pocket costs.
