To all of the small, local brand founders out there bootstrapping your way through a challenging market environment, and wondering how to grow effectively… Look around you for inspiration, and watch the brands that are succeeding. 👉Should you hire a broker or a sales leader? Maybe, if you can afford it, and you have enough scale to warrant it. 👉Should you expand from DTC, into retail? Probably, if you are ready. 👉Should you expand slowly, with the right retailers, at a pace that works for you, that you can afford, and are able to support yourself with demos and merchandising? Yes. Some things never change. 20+ years ago when I was an entry-level store level buyer at Whole Foods Market , the brands that did the best in my store were the ones who came in every week and demoed their product. 👉A lot of those small local brands that I saw demoing back then went on to become household names, like Vitamin Water 👉It works. It will always work. 👉If you think your retailer/broker/distributor is EVER going to do as good of a job as YOU can at evangelizing your own product, you’re wrong. At Pod Foods we work with a LOT of small local-scale brands. There are some of them that get this, and others who think they are going to become multi-millionaires just because the buyer at a cool retailer decided to approve their product. Getting onto the shelf is the easy part. When I was a buyer I approved 1000s of products, and I also discontinued 1000s more when they didn’t sell. Products that taste good and get demoed consistently sell, and they don’t get discontinued. The Lotion Company is going to grow and succeed, because of how they are approaching their growth…I’m calling it right now. Not going to lie, I'm really rather excited for February 1st.
