SETBACK or COMEBACK? When she wanted to become a brew master after having taken a degree from Melbourne University, (and having topped her class), Kiran Mazumdar Shaw was told, "It's a man's work!" SETBACK! She started her pharma business in the garage of her rented house with a the capital of Rs. 10,000. This was Biocon India, subsidiary of Biocon Biochemicals owned by Leslie Auchincloss. She says, "I had a huge credibility hurdle to overcome. I failed to get financial support. I failed to recruit people I wanted to. The first fifteen years were all about survival." SETBACK AFTER SETBACK! Years later, Auchincloss sold his stake in Biocon India to Unilever. SETBACK! Kiran Mazumdar Shaw started the work on oral insulin and launched it. It had to be rolled back because it could not have the desired impact on haemoglobin although it did on insulin. 'That was a dark hour. I had built the drug with great expectations.' SETBACK! Pfizer had a deal with Biocon to market and commercialize biosimilar versions of insulin produced by Biocon. In 2012, Pfizer withdrew from the deal. SETBACK!
