I help ex-pats thrive in Korean business culture. Korean Business Navigator | Expat and Executive Coach
"엄마!" (Omma! Mom!) 😍 In Korea, the bond between mothers and their children is undeniable. The deep love many Koreans have for their mothers stems from cultural, historical, and familial traditions that prioritize the mother-child relationship 💖. But what happens when these same women step into the workplace? While Korean culture reveres the role of mothers 👩👧👦, there’s a flip side. Despite their crucial role in raising the next generation of leaders, women in the workplace often face a very different reality. Why is it that we praise moms at home, yet expect them to take a back seat at work? 🤔 Korean moms are expected to prioritize family over career 👩💼➡️🏡, leading to the “M-shaped” employment pattern—where women often leave the workforce during childbearing years, only to return later to lower-level positions. Why can’t we value the skills they’ve gained while being at the helm of a household? Let’s talk about Korean corporate culture 🧑💼👨💼: It’s been heavily male-dominated, with loooong working hours ⏰ that can make work-life balance feel like an impossible dream for working moms. Sure, the government and companies like Samsung and LG are taking steps with family-friendly policies 👏—think flexible work hours and on-site childcare 🍼—but are they the norm, or still the exception? How much progress have we *really* made? Moms are multitasking queens 👑, with empathy and organizational skills 💡👩💻 that make them invaluable to any team. So, why aren’t these strengths celebrated in the workplace as much as technical or managerial skills? What would happen if companies saw these qualities as a huge *plus* rather than something to overlook? 💪 The government is stepping up with measures to support working moms, from extended maternity leave to financial incentives 🏛️, but how can we close the gap between policy and practice? What will it take to make the workplace as supportive of moms as the home? ⚖️ There’s hope 🌱! Attitudes are shifting, and policies are slowly starting to catch up. Drawing a parallel to the sentiments in the article below, what if we embraced these skills more openly? What if companies truly valued the unique strengths that mothers bring, just as they do in their families? 💪💖 Let’s recognize that while progress is underway, the road to fully integrating and respecting the role of mothers in the Korean workplace is still a long one 🛣️. But with the right mindset, we can get there together. What do you think? Can we change the conversation about motherhood and work in Korea? 🙋♀️

"I'd like to thank my mom..." Last night, as I watched the Emmys, I heard this over and over again in acceptance speeches. Whether their mom was there with them, watching from another place, or watching from above, the thank yous, the theme of 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 was so pervasive throughout the show. This beautiful refrain really made me think about moms and motherhood, about how all that we do, all we mean to our kids, and yet we 𝐬𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 from sharing it all in our professional lives. Despite being the first person to see the potential, in encouraging and educating their kids, in celebrating wins and successes, and being the one to help pick up the pieces when it felt like all hope was lost, we still feel like being a mom is not allowed in the workplace. Why do we this? What would happen if we embraced our motherhood and even 𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒂𝒅𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆? What if we took advantage of the skills we gained in being a mom and displayed them in our professional lives? Oh and what if companies took a look at moms and said, 𝒚𝒆𝒔, 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕'𝒔 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒆? That is someone that I want to be part of my team, my company. What if those in charge of hiring prioritized the skills that came with motherhood and used those to influence their decisions? And what if the extra demands of showing up as a mom were not seen as negatives but rather 𝐩𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬? So today, I encourage you to wear your motherhood on your sleeve, to speak about your experiences as a mom (whatever that means to you), and to not shy away from that, thinking it doesn't belong in the professional world, and instead embrace it as part of who you are and what you do. Also, if your company, your boss, your partners, anyone who has embraced that part of you, please SHARE and tag them. We would love to honor those rockstars. #colettelouisetisdahl #cltfoundation #emmys #thankmymom #momsrock

Happy Thanksgiving 🇨🇦 As a mother to young children and business owner, I find myself in survival mode more often than not, so although I understand the importance of stopping to reflect on and appreciate how far you’ve come, it’s not always in the cards or schedule. That being said, it is a long weekend and thus the perfect opportunity to do just that. Here are a few things I’m grateful for: Entrepreneur Edition 📌A team of incredibly creative women that believe in my business Bowda Creative Co. 📌All of of our clients over the years, both good & bad. Good = blessing, bad = lesson 📌YOY growth. Pandemic changed everything so I know this isn’t the case for every business. 📌To still be in the game 11 years after starting. 📌Being able to work from home/anywhere & make my own hours 📌A husband Eric Luca that supports my dream & vision, always has since day one Motherhood Edition 🤰My husband stepping up to stay home with our young boys so I can grow my agency. 🤰Breastfeeding my babies for a culmination of nearly 3 years, and finally being DONE which = getting my body back. 🤰Working from home + husband home means we have never had to rush any milestones for our babies. 🤰A mother in law who loves our boys & helps us as much as she can. 🤰Having two full term babies despite two high risk pregnancies spent on bed rest. Being a mother and a founder are both all consuming roles, but taking moments of gratitude - no matter how small - do help make things a little more bearable. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and has a moment to count to their blessings.

This is a heartbreaking reminder of how vital it is to be there for one another, especially during the most challenging times. I lost a close friend to suicide this year, and the pain of that loss is something I carry with me every day. It’s a stark reminder that we can never truly know the struggles others are facing, even those closest to us. Mental health struggles are often invisible, making it all the more important to take the time to check in on our loved ones and those around us. If you or someone you know is struggling, here’s a list of international suicide hotline numbers: https://lnkd.in/ek45ivPc. Share this resource—it could save a life. Let’s be there for each other, not just today, but every day. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay
Three people I know took their own lives this year… All of them young men under 30. As we carry on with our busy lives, let’s remember to check on our colleagues, friends, and family. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay
