Today, on this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, let us reflect on the importance of his words and their application to the ongoing fight against systemic oppression faced by Native Americans. “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” - Martin Luther King Jr. These powerful words resonate deeply with Native communities who continue to face social, economic, and political challenges. As we remember Dr. King’s legacy, let us also acknowledge the struggles of Indigenous peoples, who have been fighting for their rights, dignity, and sovereignty for generations. The fight against systemic oppression is not limited to one community or race. It encompasses all those affected by injustice. It is a call to action for us all to stand together in solidarity, challenging the status quo and demanding equality for all. Let us amplify the voices of Native American activists, leaders, and organizations working tirelessly to address historical injustices and create a better future. By learning from their experiences, stories, and perspectives, we can foster a more inclusive society that embraces diversity and respects the rights of Indigenous peoples. A few thoughts on Dr. King’s legacy and the work changemakers and those with power need to lead in 2024.
So often when we talk about Dr. Martin Luther King we center the goals of harmony and forget that he was viewed as a radical disruptor of the status quo. He was arrested several times, he was marked as a trouble maker and he was not celebrated nationally for his work until after his death. Today as you honor this amazing man for his legacy let’s also think about the work we as changemakers and people that want to move the needle on social justice need to do in 2024. We all need to be the disruptors. If you have power use this year to recognize that you are probably maintaining the status quo that excludes and marginalizes people and communities. Allyship is more than centering the good you want to do in an aspirational way. It is about actually taking on the risk of being seen as a radical disruptor who will not be comfortable until everyone realizes and experiences the dream of full inclusion and opportunity we talk about as a country. Thank you Dr. King for being that risk taker for us all. Here is a great article from 2010 that highlighted this part of Dr King’s Legacy. https://lnkd.in/gWYWK3y3

As we commemorate Juneteenth, let’s reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s powerful words: "For more than a century of slavery and another century of segregation, Negroes did not find mass unity nor could they mount mass actions... But in the last decade, Negroes united and marched. And out of the new unity and action, vast monuments of dignity were shaped, courage was forged, and hope took concrete form." Dr. King's observations remind us of the critical role of class and mass actions in the fight for equality. These mechanisms allow marginalized communities to unify, amplify their voices, and challenge systemic injustices. June 19, 1865, marked the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy, a pivotal moment in the journey toward justice and equality. For those of us working in law, Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of the progress we have made and the ongoing commitment required to uphold justice for all. #Equality #Justice #CivilRights #Juneteenth

Martin Luther King Jr. not only had a dream of dismantling racism, poverty, and militarism, he also understood what it would take to do it. If you are only posting quotes from his “I Have a Dream Speech,” consider how you are doing the work of building a more just and inclusive society more intently and effectively, instead offering platitudes. MLK, Jr. shared his dream, but he also said: “If peace means a willingness to be exploited economically, dominated politically, humiliated and segregated, I don’t want peace. If peace means being complacently adjusted to a deadening status quo, I don’t want peace. If peace means keeping my mouth shut in the midst of injustice and evil, I don’t want it. Peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but the existence of justice for all people.” “And the price that America must pay for the continued oppression of the Negro and other minority groups is the price of its own destruction.” “Why is equality so assiduously avoided? Why does white America delude itself, and how does it rationalize the evil it retains?” If you are actively fighting to maintain the status quo of hate, economic inequality, and injustice, consider not posting and instead spend the day understanding your role in oppressive thinking and actions. If you don’t think you contribute to them, sit longer and think again. Become the change you post on MLK Day. #mlkday #martinlutherkingjr

Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Reflecting on Privilege and the Ongoing Struggle for Equity 🕊️ This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I am reminded of the privilege I carry as a white woman and the responsibility it entails in the ongoing struggle for equity. Today is a day to honor not only Dr. King's legacy but also the tireless work of Black activists who continue to lead the fight for fair treatment and opportunity for all. Recognizing my privilege means understanding that the journey towards equity is far from over. It requires listening to, supporting, and amplifying the voices of those who experience these disparities firsthand. Black activists today are at the forefront, continuing the work that Dr. King began, breaking down systemic barriers and advocating for true equity. Their efforts remind us that equity is about recognizing and addressing the different hurdles various communities face. As someone who benefits from systemic advantages, I believe it's crucial to actively engage in dismantling these injustices. This includes educating myself, challenging inequities, and using my position to advocate for change. Today, I reflect on how I can better support the fight for equity, inspired by the current leaders who champion this cause. Let’s all commit to being part of the solution, in honor of Dr. King and the many activists who follow in his footsteps. #MLKDay #ReflectingOnPrivilege #EquityInAction #SupportingChange
