It is estimated that the average person will spend one-third of their life at work. That is roughly 90,000 hours at work over your lifetime. Knowing this, there are two things you should always focus on when it comes to work and your career. You have to love what you do and really enjoy and care about the people you work with. When I read this quote I realize how fortunate I am to be working at Catapult Health.

A while ago, I read a Medium post from 2020 about Teacher Appreciation Week which included a meme that said “If someone's job requires an 'appreciation week' it means they're not getting paid enough.” Let’s face it, raise your hand if you’ve ever been in a low-ranking role and someone said “you’re the most important person on the team.” ✋🏼 ✋🏼 ✋🏼 I’ve had that said to me in more than one role and on more than one occasion, and if it’s true, why do I still take such offense to it? Some of those “appreciation” roles include nurses, admin staff, and teachers, and if you find the common denominator here, you might see “women” written underneath it all. According to the US Department of Labor, nurses, admin staff, and teachers rank in the top five most common occupations for women. These crews are often the ones working the latest hours and sacrifice their weekends to get the job done, and yet, they’re often paid less than other roles in their industry. Despite this, we boil our gratitude down to a single day or week of cards, balloons, and cupcakes. It happened to me just yesterday in fact, when staffing an after-hours work event. I was supporting the main show and the person running the event said over my shoulder “just so you know, you’re the most important person here.” For context, I was waiting client's drink orders and operating the “vibe check.” Lower ranking roles - salaried or hourly - are usually thankless, washed-over, under-staffed, and risk degradation by other staff or contractors. We don’t want cards and candy, we want fair wages, respect at the workplace, and time to have a life. I think we all have an opportunity here to begin changing the primary narrative. What if we went from seeing these - let’s face it, women - not only as valuable but valued assets and leaders of the team or organization. I'd love to have a conversation about making this happen! Alas, let me know below - Is it more important to be the MVP or the MVP: the Most Valuable Person or the Most Valued Person? Could they intersect? As National EMS week approaches I want to send out a reminder to everyone. The best way to show appreciation to those working in the field is not a pizza party or trinket. The best way to show your appreciation, is to tell them everyday how important they are to the agency. EMS personnel deserve recognition more than once a year. Many of us work tirelessly to manage work and home schedules. Missing out on many family milestones, birthdays, and holidays. Hearing “you knew what you were getting into when you signed up” is not an acceptable response! There is always another agency or job that is willing to accept your personnel. Tell them openly how much they are appreciated and how their constant hard work means a great deal! You would be surprised how a simple act can change the attitude of an employee. All it takes is a simple 5 second acknowledgement. As a team lead I have made it part of my routine to let me crews know that I couldn’t do this alone, and that their efforts are greatly appreciated. This not only boosts morale, but, may just change the mindset of the employee having a bad day. Remember a simple ‘Thank you for all your hard work’ can go a long way!
