The Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (#SIDS4) has adopted the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS), with disaster risk reduction as a central tenet for sustainable development in SIDS. "Small Island Developing States are among the most disaster-prone countries in the world," said Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction. "They face a disaster mortality rate more than double the global average, and disaster costs that are among the highest in the world relative to the size of their economies. In addition, many face an existential threat from the growing climate crisis." The ABAS seeks to address the vulnerability of SIDS, with clear calls to action around enhancing multi-hazard early warning systems and applying UNDRR’s Principles for Resilient Infrastructure, and stresses the importance of global investments in resilience for island nations. ➡️ https://ow.ly/V8lC50S3W0a #SIDS4 #EarlyWarningsForAll

🎯 Second COP28 UAE Session of the day: -> How to Assure Anticipatory Humanitarian Action is Mitigating Intersecting Vulnerabilities? This second session brought to light the critical need to formulate tailored anticipatory actions amidst the escalating impact of climate-driven disasters. Farah Kabir, former GNDR Global Board Chair and Country Director of ActionAid Bangladesh, stressed the need for tailored anticipatory actions amidst rising climate-driven disasters. Acknowledging diverse community challenges, she calls for simplified guidelines, accounting for specific disaster types and recognizing varied age group needs. Mihir Bhatt, Director of All India Disaster Management Institute (AIDMI), highlighted the increasing intersectionality of disasters and called for heightened investments, institutional mechanisms, and awareness. Lourivania Soares Santos, a Parliamentary Advisor in the State of Bahia, Brazil, underscored the governance challenges at both national and municipal levels, urging mobilisation of civil society for effective implementation. Adessou Kossivi, Regional Lead for Africa at GNDR, emphasised the significance of ex-ante support and reframed community perspectives as stakeholders rather than beneficiaries. Fatima, a GNDR member from Pakistan, highlighted the crucial link between anticipatory actions and accountability within developmental programs. Together, these diverse perspectives reinforce the urgent call for proactive measures in the face of mounting vulnerabilities. Formulating targeted anticipatory actions is crucial amid the escalating impact of climate-driven disasters. 🆕 Explore how in our just launched Locally Led Anticipatory Action Guide & Toolkit: https://lnkd.in/daVufq8z Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) #AnticipatoryAction #ClimateResilience #ClimateChangeAdaptation #DisasterPreparedness #CommunityResilience #ClimateActionNow

Pakistan is home to over 13,000 glaciers across the Karakoram, Hindu Kush, and Himalayan mountain ranges, making its northern region the largest glacier reservoir outside the Polar Regions. However, due to significant climate changes, these glaciers and their surrounding habitats face severe threats, with 10,000 glaciers reportedly retreating according to the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) project. The United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) GLOF-II initiative operates in 16 valleys in Gilgit-Baltistan and eight valleys in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). This project empowers local communities to identify and manage GLOF risks and other climate change impacts, enhances public services to reduce disaster risks, and improves community preparedness and disaster response. Additionally, the project supports the development of sustainable livelihood options in the project areas, emphasizing women's participation to ensure food security and sustainable livelihoods.

United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) International Day for #DisasterRiskReduction « In 2023, the International Day will explore the reciprocal relationship between #disasters and #inequality. Inequality and disaster #vulnerability are two sides of the same coin: unequal access to services, such as #finance and #insurance, leaves the most at #risk exposed to the #danger of disasters; while disaster impacts exacerbate #inequalities and push the most at risk further into #poverty. » #DRR #ethics #care #inclusion #justice #empowerment #RRC #éthique #coconstruction #AnsanmNouLéParé #ParéPasParé #RésilienceTour #JNR #resilience #equity #resilientcommunities #TousRésilients #information #sensibilisation #communication #science #data Association française pour la prévention des catastrophes naturelles et technologiques (AFPCNT) PIROI - Croix-Rouge française Institut des Risques Majeurs Centre Européen de Prévention du Risque d'Inondation Prévention MAIF Association RESILIANCES AMARIS
