Have you ever wondered why EVs don't use gear reduction in their drive trains? The answer lies in the fundamental difference between EVs and ICE vehicles. Unlike ICE vehicles that require gearboxes to match the engine's output to the wheel's speed and torque, EVs have a flat torque curve. This means they can deliver power to the wheels more efficiently without the need for a gearbox. However, some EVs still use gearboxes to improve efficiency by reducing the load on the motor. But what about above 1000cc 2 wheelers? Why are they still using a gearbox? The answer is simple: considering Indian people's riding behavior and the roads, EVs need gearboxes in India. While EVs can provide a hassle-free, good amount of torque in just twisting the throttle, the addition of a gearbox can improve efficiency and reduce the load on the motor, making it a better fit for the Indian market. This is electric VW from 1985. It was a second generation and it was called Golf II CitySTROMer. Until 1991 they produced 70 of this EVs. The vehicles are initially reserved for well-known energy producers for testing purposes. Including the lead batteries, the curb weight is an impressive 1,410 kilograms. The short-term output of the electric motor is 23 kW (31 hp), and 17.5 kW (24 hp) is available permanently. Allow eight to ten hours to fully charge the drive batteries via the 220-volt network.
