Very important new article on inclusive research!
Founder of ND Perspective, Neurodiversity Rights Advocate, Psychologist & Neuro-Inclusion Specialist
It's Published! I am very excited to announce that my article 'Eight Principles of Neuro-Inclusion; An Autistic Perspective on Innovating Inclusive Research Methods' is now published! As a novice autistic PhD researcher, ensuring research is in fact inclusive is a high priority for me. However, what I found when doing my initial pilot study, was that all the things that I thought were important, such as tailoring of resources, rest breaks, and open stimming, were only the start of what it means to be inclusive in research. As an autistic person leading research I also needed adjustments throughout the research process, that I hadn't fully considered. Furthermore, what I thought was the right approach to take in my study design, could have been improved if the specific autistic demographic were considered more fully. I found navigating the complexities of inclusive research challenging, and this led me to design a framework to support (myself) and those of us conducting research with autistic participant groups, when utilsing an inclusive and participatory approach. The article offers eight reflexive considerations that can be flexibly applied when designing inclusive research. I hope my contribution will make inclusive research feel less daunting to those of us who find it so, and through an experimental approach to working, that new inclusive methods will become proven ways of working in their own right. Supporting and Celebrating our Neurodivergent Community, Jess x x

Reposting to read and comment later. As you might know I see neurotypes as initial conditions in complex adaptive systems. Evolutionary Perspectives in Neuro-Inclusive Research: A Response to Jessica Dark's Groundbreaking Work In her seminal paper, Jessica Dark lays a robust foundation for the integration of neurodiversity in research methodologies through her "Eight Principles of Neuro-Inclusion." Her work underscores the critical need for inclusive practices that not only value but actively engage autistic scholars, community leaders, and professionals. This is a commendable step towards rectifying epistemic injustices and promoting a more equitable research landscape. Dark's principles challenge us to rethink conventional research paradigms and align perfectly with the ongoing discourse surrounding neurodiversity and inclusivity. However, as we celebrate this advancement, it's essential to recognize the dynamic nature of neuro-types and consider the evolutionary significance these variations hold within our species. The Evolutionary-Stress Framework (ESF) offers a complementary perspective, emphasizing neurodiversity as an adaptive evolutionary response to complex environmental challenges. This framework enriches Dark's principles by highlighting the necessity of viewing neurotypes not as static categories but as fluid, context-dependent manifestations of human diversity and adaptability. Incorporating the ESF into our research practices can further revolutionize how we approach neurodiversity, urging us to consider: The Adaptive Nature of Neurodiversity: Recognizing neurotypes as evolved responses to environmental stressors enriches our understanding and appreciation of neurodivergent individuals' unique strengths and challenges. Dynamic Systems and Complexity: By viewing neurodiversity through the lens of complex adaptive systems, we can develop more nuanced and holistic research methodologies that reflect the interconnectedness of genetic, environmental, and social factors. Inclusion of Neurodivergent Voices: Expanding inclusive research to integrate the ESF means actively engaging neurodivergent individuals not just as subjects but as co-creators of research, leveraging their unique insights to uncover new dimensions of human adaptability and resilience. . ...Continues in comments #Neurodiversity #InclusiveResearch #EvolutionaryStressFramework #NeuroInclusion

PhD Student in Global Leadership at Indiana Tech / If Autism is on a spectrum, then so are our talents!
If you want to find out how well an autistic researcher can write an article, allow me to introduce you to Jessica Dark ND. Her article on the eight principles of neuro-inclusion is an excellent piece on how to bring neurodivergent people into research. We need more voices like hers in academia to help improve how all of us can be included in current and future research. #academia #academiclife #neurodiversityinclusion #research #article

🎓 PUBLISH YOUR DISABILITY RESEARCH ON CRIP LIFE 🎓 With a new year comes new beginnings. Many of you have or about to graduate from university after spending years of study, and about to embark on your new chapter. But after all that time and effort writiting dissertations & thesis, producing projects and creating unique ideas, you want people to read, view admire your incredible work. For those of you who know a little about doctoral studies and being disabled researchers, you may know how difficult and expensive it is to get your research published. From submitting your paper to seeing it published, can take many months and revisions. The fee to do so can run into thousands of pounds. It’s important to publish research for a number of reasons: * To address a gap in knowledge * To enable peer review by other academics * Allows the methodology to be repeated by other researchers, to confirm or refute your results * To inform practice in your field of study * To build an academic’s reputation. So, Crip Life wants to publish your research! Not for free but for a Pay What You Can (PWYC) fee. If you have a research or conference paper, thesis, book, dissertation or documentary of relevance to the disabled community, please, email joanna@criplife.co.uk. #CripLife #CallingAllDisabledResearchers #DisabledResearchers #DisabilityStudies #DisabledStudents #NeurodivergentStudents #UniversityGraduates #PWYC #Disability #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityCommunity
