💡 Innovation news 💡 Last year, Innovate BC awarded $300,000 to Rapidia Tech Inc. and the University of British Columbia through the Ignite program to help them commercialize their project in advanced materials and manufacturing. The team behind this project is developing corrosion and wear-resistant materials for a metal 3D printing system. This approach will allow for more efficient part designs, reduce material waste and manufacturing facility footprints for faster product development in resource industries like mining and oil and gas. The project, led by Artem Bylinskii, CEO of Rapidia Tech in collaboration with Dr. Adam Clare at the University of British Columbia, is not just revolutionizing metal part manufacturing; they're shaping the future of the industry. CelluCircle Wins Major EU Horizon Europe Funding as Part of GearUp Consortium! We’re thrilled to announce that CelluCircle, as part of the GearUp consortium, has been awarded substantial funding through the EU Horizon Europe program! This four-year, well-financed project is set to accelerate our mission to redefine what’s possible with recycled materials. Project Highlights: The project will focus on industrial 3D printing and advanced machine learning (ML) and modeling to ensure recycled materials—such as discarded textiles—achieve the same performance standards as their non-recycled counterparts. CelluCircle will collaborate closely with leading consortium partners to produce high-performance 3D-printed parts from discarded textiles, contributing to critical applications in a range of industries. Our Role: Leveraging our proprietary prechemical process, we’ll enhance and scale our nanocomposite solutions for discarded textiles. Additionally, we’ll further develop thermomechanical filament and compounding methods, with advanced ML enabling efficient scalability of the process. This funding marks an incredible step toward boosting our commercialisation pace and scaling internal resources to meet growing demand for sustainable, high-performance materials. Proven vehicle reusability has opened the market for new, smaller players. Additive manufacturing is finally thriving, not only in rocket engines but also in rocket structures. Stainless steel is being chosen over composite materials because it is cheaper, faster and easier to iterate, using conventional industrial processes but also additive manufacturing. Do you think or know of any significant evolutions in composite material building processes that could make them more competitive for application in rocket construction?

A new analysis of the deformation mechanisms which cause 3D-printed materials to fail under strain could help create future generations of stronger, lighter plastics, unlocking transformative benefits for industry.   Professor S. Kumar led the research, which provides unprecedented insight into the delicate balance of structural factors at play in the design and construction of #lattice #materials – honeycomb-like cellular structures which combine light weight with impressive strength and energy absorption abilities.   The team developed a design parameter called the ‘enhancement factor’, which provides a reliable way to predict how new lattice designs can be fine-tuned to minimise structural defects and maximise performance.   New guidelines for 3D printing based on the team’s findings, published as part of a paper in the journal Advanced Materials Technologies, could help material scientists develop robust new #3Dprinted lattices with advanced properties. The European Conference on Composite Materials (ECCM21) took place last week in Nantes with more than 1400 participants. Thanks to the organiser and ESCM, I have been invited to give a keynote lecture focussing on how space is contributing to innovation in the field of composite. It is good to mention that the support of the European Space Agency for advanced technology development in this field is as the forefront of the main societal, economical and technological topics in the field of composite. In a nut shell, new development leading to sustanability in composite based on development of new materials that are in line with ESA Green Agenda and European regulation have been heavely promoted: 100% biobased resin, Vitrimer resin and related composite, self-healing composites leading to recyclibility, reusability, repairability as well as advanced topic on additive manufacturing of composites, 4D printing and not forgetting demisability aspects. The sensor triad combines the possibilities of ceramic additive manufacturing with single-axis MEMS acceleration sensors and gyroscopes. These offer significantly higher precision than sensors with multiple axes on one die. The ceramic baseplate, sensor carrier and cover are stereolithographically printed from an aluminum oxide slurry and thermally processed accordingly. The metal and insulation layers are applied by screen printing and fired. The circuit is then assembled and sealed with the cover. The result is a compact system that enables navigation even in areas without external references.
