Invitation to participate in the ‘Automatic software verification tools’ research project    We are reaching out to you with an exciting opportunity to participate in a groundbreaking research project at The University of Manchester on the use or non-use of automatic software verification tools.    This research aims to explore the use and non-use of verification tools by software engineers and developers when identifying or proving the absence of bugs in large software systems. The focus is on understanding how we can improve the usability of these tools.     We are conducting informal interviews with software engineers and developers, guided by a general set of questions. The interviews will take approximately 30 minutes and will be conducted in person or online between May and June 2024.     Your participation in this research project is a unique opportunity to contribute to advancing knowledge in the field of formal verification tools. Your experiences are invaluable, and your insights will shape the outcomes of our research, providing practical knowledge for academia and industry. 🎮 Exciting News! Recently, I completed IBM's gamified assessment test, unveiling my "tech type" as an investigative strategist. 🕵️♂️ But before we delve into that, allow me to share a memorable anecdote: A customer once introduced himself with the enigmatic words, "I'm a strategist. I develop strategies and I pursue them." His abstract definition of a "strategist" left me pondering, a reminder that the term can be as intriguing as it is elusive. Fortunately, IBM provides a clearer picture of what it means to be an investigative strategist: "Strategists embrace the abstract. Like magic, you find connections in seemingly unrelated tech concepts. Insight is your sixth sense, and where others see complexity, you investigate deeper to uncover hidden solutions. Your conceptual and analytical prowess propels you towards careers in cybersecurity, data science, software engineering, and tech strategy." Last Friday, I had the incredible opportunity to learn more about cybersecurity with Macarena Dabbah and Inna Bozhinova at the UBS Wolfsberg Center as a member of this year's Tomorrow's Talent Program. It was a hands-on experience to learn more about concepts and to code and decode Caesar's Cypher with my group (kudos to our awesome team!). In 2022, I fell in love with the role of technology in human life. I got to learn how indigenous tribes would use their knowledge to predict the consequences of climate change. Also, how they would map out their existence according to their data. This was during my stay at DCAF and I can only thank Linda Sánchez Avendaño, PhD for her support and guidance (I still remember all your advice - thank you, really!). From then on, I started to take more courses related to data, data visualization, technology, and so on. And boy, did I learn much! From how we define technology to how is the scientific method itself, and the current new techs. When Brad Smith came back to the Geneva Graduate Institute for a lecture, I knew the topic for my thesis. And it was on the role of the private sector in cybersecurity during periods of war. I thought it would also be a good start to transition my career to the private sector. I am super happy to have been the third on the quiz because it means I still remember the main concepts. Hopefully, the job will also join the conversation soon. The most important part of the lecture (for me) was the highlight of how there are SO many positions in technology and not just coding. On managing your academic identity (or check your publications). Every so often, I do an Internet search on myself. I check in google. I check in Google Scholar. I usually don't find surprises. BUT. I do it because of stories like Laura Schaefer. Retraction Watch reports her identity was stolen by unscrupulous actors and used to publish papers in the Journal of Robotics Spectrum, Journal of Machine and Computing and Journal of Computing and Natural Science, all titles belonging to a publisher in Kenya called AnaPub. But worse, they found additional evidence of papers published with another faculty member's name as well. More here: https://lnkd.in/enfE3Qpe So what to do? First, know that if you spot someone's identity stolen, it is not their fault. Their information was likely ripped from public sources. Second, screen shots are magic. Document the wierdness. Third, contact the author. They likely don't know their identity was stolen. Fourth, if you confirm it's not a real author, contact the publisher. Finally, be circumspect. Don't drop names. Don't drop journals. The victims are embarrassed and the criminals my sue you. Let the journal editors take the process over. It's their job to manage it - not yours - the whistleblowers! If you are proactive, manage your profile, check on your scopus now and then, you'll be ok, esp. if you catch theft early. Best of luck! #jobmarket #earlycareerscholars #identitytheft
