RISING WATERS, SINKING HOPE: A Call to Action for a Flood-Free Nigeria As we write this, our heart goes out to the people of Maduguri, Borno State, who are facing one of the most devastating floods in recent history. The images of destroyed homes, lost lives, and displaced families are a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of negligence. But this is not just a natural disaster; it's a preventable tragedy. For years, we've known that the dams surrounding Borno State have been neglected, left to deteriorate, and ignored. We've known that the water levels rise high from September due to heavy rainfall. Yet, we've failed to act. The result is a catastrophic flood that could have been avoided. But Maduguri is not alone. As the rainy season intensifies, other states will face similar challenges. It's time for us to come together and demand action from our local, state and federal governments. We must insist that they: - Inspect and maintain our dams - Channel water properly - Clear major drainages And as citizens, we must take responsibility too. We must ensure our own drainages are clear, and waste is disposed of properly. This is not just a matter of infrastructure; it's a matter of life and death. It's a matter of our collective future. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our nation to act. Let us rise above the apathy and indifference that have defined our response to these disasters. Let us embrace the spirit of patriotism and demand a better Nigeria. A Nigeria where our governments prioritize our safety and well-being. A Nigeria where we work together to build a flood-free future. The change we want begins with us. Let us make it happen. . . . #jesesiands #flooding #borno #maiduguri #DAMS #neglect #septemberflood #LifeAndDeath #people #bornostate

According to a statement issued by the ministry, the situation is expected to worsen in lowland and coastal areas, and landslides and mudslides may also occur in areas with steep slopes and ravines. Months of flooding have destroyed homes, roads and bridges and displaced more than 210,000 people. The rains have also affected other East African countries.
