🏆 Reminder to submit your nominations for the #L4LAward #2025! The impact of the Lawyers for Lawyers Award is exemplified by its first ever laureate Alec Muchadehama, a human rights lawyer from #Zimbabwe. In 2011, he was awarded the L4L award, which he shares ‘feels like yesterday’, as the ceremony was such a ‘momentous and joyous occasion’. Alec received the prize for his perseverance and exceptional courage in his efforts at promoting the rule of law and human rights. Two years prior to receiving the L4L Award, Alec was faced with judicial harassment in connection to his representation of a journalist and two members of the Movement for Democratic Change who had been abducted and detained by State Security agents in 2008. He was suspected of securing the ‘unlawful release’ on bail of his clients, leading to him being arrested. It is believed his arrest was aimed at sanctioning his human rights activities. This event, amongst many others, shows the precarious situation for human rights lawyers such as Alec, making visibility and recognition continuously important. Alec himself spoke of the valuable impact of the award as follows: “The Award received widespread coverage worldwide. In Zimbabwe a special feature on the Award was carried in the most influential newspaper in Zimbabwe, the Daily News. The award has continued to inspire me to do more for the advancement, protection and promotion of human rights. Further, the Award has acted as a deterrence against unnecessary abuse by the State and State Actors who are the primary source of human rights violations in Zimbabwe. They now know that organisations such as L4L and the world are watching.” 🔗 Watch the video to learn more about Alec's story: https://lnkd.in/eXaP7bTf 📅 Deadline for nominations: 23 February 2025, 23:59 CET. 👉 For more information about the award and how to submit a nomination: https://lnkd.in/e687SQPT #AlecMuchadehama #L4Laward #HumanRights #Advocacy

To be able to fight for what’s really ours, we have to understand the issues including the arbitral ruling and of course the basis of which, which is the UNCLOS. To be able to understand all these issues, it is fundamental for us to understand us as an archipelagic nation. And for us to understand our being our an archipelagic nation, we need to know our complete history including pre-colonial history. https://bit.ly/3RZJb9m
