Seattle Children’s Research Institute and the Allen Institute for Immunology today launched a first-of-its-kind study, known as the Seattle Spatial Transcriptomic Research in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Evaluation (STRIDE) study to better understand how and why inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD) begins, and ultimately, provide targeted therapy to children who suffer from IBD. IBD – which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis – affects 3 million people in the U.S., and 30% of all IBD diagnoses are in patients 20 years and younger. The incidence of IBD in children is increasing. Currently, there is no cure for pediatric IBD. Seattle STRIDE will be the first study of its kind for children in the world to deploy novel techniques (single cell spatial transcriptomics and single cell multi-omics) to understand IBD disease states. Researchers will use state-of-the-art technology to understand how genes and other molecules behave in individual cells of newly diagnosed patients who haven't been treated yet. “This study will provide the truest understanding of the intestinal immune system using the most thorough and unbiased techniques to date,” said Dr. Hengqi (Betty) Zheng, principal investigator for the trial at Seattle Children’s. The study is recruiting participants ages 6 to 18 years old over a three-year period. Learn more about the STRIDE study on https://lnkd.in/gb__TNEE.
