Edenstone Group and Pobl Group link up to create innovative new housing partnership to deliver new homes in Cardiff, South Wales

Last week, Saratoga Associates had the privilege of presenting at the 2024 NY Upstate APA Conference in Ithaca alongside an incredible team! Jackson LaSarso, AICP, and Dan Shearer, PE, LEED AP, joined forces with Urbana’s Deanna Tompkins and Dave Oliver to explore how grant funding can be used to build sustainable and resilient communities. This grant session partnered with Arcadis' Nicolette Wagoner, AICP, LEED AP ND! The session highlighted the Town of Urbana’s success in securing and leveraging grants like the New York Forward Program and the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) to revitalize their waterfront and strengthen community resilience in the face of climate change. Attendees gained insights into the entire grant process — from application to project implementation — and how these initiatives are making a tangible impact on the community.  The case study emphasized: -Sustainability in planning and infrastructure development to address climate resilience 🌱 -Equity in community engagement, ensuring that diverse resident needs were integrated into the planning process 🤝 -Strategic use of federal and state funding sources, such as the Recreational Trails Program and the Appalachian Regional Commission, to support transformational community development projects 🚧 This session provided planners, grant writers, landscape architects, and municipal leaders with actionable strategies to effectively leverage funding for community revitalization. So, we're not sure what happened on Friday to day five of our #FestiveCountdown? 🤔 We think the elves may have been playing their games or perhaps the team Christmas parties started too early 🥳 Anyway, it's never too late to post so here goes, and we’re in Leeds with our growing team there, celebrating a great year with some fantastic highlights: 🎄 As session partners to UKREiiF, we welcomed more than 250 of our clients, collaborators and colleagues to our event at Bomba Paella as part of the fringe programme. 🎄 We shared our experience of creating resilient neighbourhoods at Climate Innovation District, the UK’s largest sustainable urban living project with fbe Leeds 🎄 We reached exciting milestones at our projects across Yorkshire, including: - The opening of the penultimate building as part of the refurbishment of Wakefield’s Grade II* listed Rutland Mills into a creative hub, Tileyard North; Topping out at The Store House, the new retail and student development at Briggate in Leeds - Completing the restoration of Doncaster Corn Exchange, bringing it back to its former glory - Sustainable housing at Ordnance Lane in York receiving the green light, a project that will deliver healthy, low carbon homes and green space for the community #Leeds #engineers #sustainability #structures #Yorkshire #transport #urbaninfrastructure #civils

Daren makes an interesting point - heritage conservation and restoration has always been tricky in schools and educational settings - adapting historic buildings for modern usage and maintaining them throughout increased footfall and wear and tear that was never expected is often a challenge. But when you take them away from their historic guardians and place them in the hands of developers (for example) no matter how sympathetic the designs, heritage will always be at risk. Proper assessment and specification is key to all this, as well as a pragmatic approach to ensuring that these buildings can be used in the most appropriate and sustainable way. #conservation #sustainability #retrofit #reuse

PEC Community Partners have selected Vanderbrand as the agency partner for Base31 in Prince Edward County (PEC), Canada. Base31 is a cultural destination located on the 70-acre site of a former World War II Air Training Base. PEC Community Partners have embarked on a 25-year plan to transform the historic site and its surrounding area into a master-planned district designed by Boston-based and internationally acclaimed urban planning and design firm, Sasaki, which will add over 7,500 homes to PEC. PEC Community Partners is a group of community builders including Caraco Development Corporation, DECO Communities, Fieldgate Homes, Paradise Developments Inc., PEC Placemaking, and Rockport Group. The partnership brings together expertise in complete community development, affordable housing and commercial space, mixed-use residential, site servicing and infrastructure, and adaptive reuse of heritage sites with a specific focus on creative placemaking. On Tuesday, April 9th, 2024, me and my colleagues from the Community Development Department at the City of Hampton had the great pleasure of presenting at the 3rd Annual Hampton Roads Social Justice Conference. Our team had the opportunity to speak about comprehensive planning and its intersection with social justice. In our presentation, we emphasized the importance of using spatial imagination, multi-dimensional perspectives, multi-disciplinary approaches, the practical application of Right to the City theory, and the strategic use of community-based partnerships to enhance planning and design, and move us towards solving urban social problems, create better affordable housing & public spaces, and ultimately crafting Places of Meaning. Lastly, a quick thought that I keep insisting on every day and at every meeting/conference that I attend: As practitioners, we must now focus on creating places that thrive, include, that are resilient, and that people want to inhabit and take ownership of. Above all, we must craft places of meaning.
