Instinctively we tend to trust numbers more than opinions. Objective trumps (poor pun) subjective almost every time in our minds. However, numbers can and do lie, very effectively. Especially now, as AI churns out numbers by the squillion, we need to be very careful which ones we use as measures of performance. #data #Goodhart #dataanalysis

Two of our colleagues, Ian Thompson and David Sookias, have written an article for Competition Policy International that provides a “view from the UK” on the use of pricing algorithms. In the article, they focus on some of the potential economics concerns surrounding their use, namely: (i) the risk of increased collusion (both explicit and tacit); and (ii) personalised pricing – and some observations on how the use of algorithms may evolve in the UK competition space going forward. In addition, they review recent regulatory precedent in relation to pricing algorithms (both from the UK and the rest of the world), and relevant empirical literature that aims to quantify the impact of pricing algorithms in various markets. The full article can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eBgjY4em #economics #competition #pricingalgorithms #collusion #personalisedpricing
The use of pricing algorithms has been a long-standing feature of certain markets. Recent debates on the ascent of AI have brought the use of such algorithms to the forefront once again. The pieces in this Chronicle address several of the issues raised by pricing algorithms in the contemporary context, with contributions from: Pieter Van Cleynenbreugel (Université de Liège) Jeanine Miklos-Thal (University of Rochester - Simon Business School) & Catherine Tucker (MIT Sloan School of Management) Brandon Gould, August Gweon, Cortlin Lannin & Terrell McSweeny (Covington & Burling LLP) Salil Mehra (Temple University - James E. Beasley School of Law) Sam Weinstein (Cardozo School of Law) Derek Sutton, Lauren Donahue, John Susoreny & Victoria Pereira (K&L Gates) David Sookias & Ian Thompson (Economic Insight) Phil Beckett & Robert Grosvenor (Alvarez & Marsal) Bruno Droghetti & Izabella Passos (Figueiredo & Velloso Advogados) #antitrust #antitrustlaw #competitionlaw #algorithms #pricing #prices #computing #business #economy

🌏 We rolled out mandatory training on generative AI for all our people, worldwide. It covers the basics of #genAI, risk guidance and an introduction to prompt engineering to get the best out of our chatbot Laila. The best bit about the project? The message the night before the roll-out from our Firmwide Managing Partner, Paul Lewis: "loved it... and learned a lot" 🌟 Particularly proud that we did this all in-house. Experts like James Phoenix, Tanya Sadoughi, Sarah Barnard and Laura Hodgson gave us all the content we needed. And then the amazing Jessica Ward, MSc CSM BEd BA and Nicholas Fromont packaged it up into digital learning modules that were beautifully designed and so engaging. #oneteam As Paul said: "Everyone talks about the importance of generative AI, but not everyone has actually used it. We wanted to change that for Linklaters and embrace adoption of this game-changing technology.” Read the full article below (£) 👇

Please take a moment to read this article (authored by myself) which looks at trade mark infringement and unjustified threats of trade mark infringement. For any advice or assistance regarding your IP, we can help you at SH&P! So please get in touch with myself or one of my colleagues.
How did a road rage incident between a cyclist and a van turn into a trade mark dispute? Here's how, as explained by SH&P's Emma Kirkpatrick: https://lnkd.in/estTAUtT Top takeaway: Be very careful when you want to allege that someone else is infringing your trade mark rights. #trademarkinfringement #nottrademarkinfringement Image source: AI

To better help companies navigate the increasingly complex international tax regime, KPMG US secured its new US patent, "System and Method for Identifying Comparables" (the '842 Patent), within an AI-powered tool. It will enhance the tedious, error-prone process of transfer pricing benchmarking by leveraging AI to automate and mine the necessary data. Thanks Ron Brash! Great moderating, by the way. I did my best to try and make AI, IOT/OT, and Regulations into an interesting subject. For those who want a copy of the presentation, you can get it at https://lnkd.in/dBCPKZ77
Use AI to steer earlier vs waiting for legislation changes to take effect. Interesting implications for established but evolving regulatory and legislative systems. Key point - save money by knowing ahead of time Patrick C Miller
