Historical Restoration 🫱🏻🫲🏾 Modern Architectural Techniques Developer Soller Group has submitted plans for an incredible 18-storey ‘upside-down’ tech tower in Manchester which incorporates several buildings at street level. Dubbed the NXQ scheme, the project is set to create a truly unique and dynamic space. The aim is to retain and respect the 19th-century buildings and the nearby Grade II listed Daily Express Building whilst incorporating forward-thinking features like intelligent façades and mixed-mode ventilation. The cantilevered structure supported by an efficient raking column will marry the old with the new harmoniously. It will be interesting to see how the final structure integrates with Manchester’s cityscape and how tech companies will utilise this innovative space. Projects like this reflect a growing emphasis on creating buildings that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sensitive. #manchester #realestate #development #propertydevelopment

A Big Win for a Challenging Project – Securing Listed Building Consent at Locksbrook Cemetery Lodge We’re delighted to share that we successfully designed and secured planning and listed building consent yesterday for a loft conversion at Locksbrook Cemetery Lodge, a Grade II listed building in Bath. This was no ordinary project—working within such a sensitive heritage setting required a multidisciplinary approach. Through innovative engineering solutions, architectural history expertise, and clever design, we demonstrated that the proposal would have minimal impact on the building’s historic fabric while unlocking its potential. Accurate surveys were crucial in understanding the constraints and opportunities, allowing us to craft a sympathetic yet practical solution. The result? A carefully considered design that respects the heritage significance of the lodge while meeting modern needs. This achievement is a testament to the power of collaboration and creative problem-solving in heritage projects. A big win for a challenging site—on to the next! #HeritageArchitecture #ListedBuildingConsent #EngineeringSolutions #LoftConversion #PlanningSuccess

Bruce Carnegie-Brown, chairman of Lloyd’s of London, has objected to the redevelopment of the former Aviva building near Leadenhall Market into a 73-story skyscraper, known as 1 Undershaft. He argues it would eliminate an important public space. The skyscraper, designed by Eric Parry, would be nearly as tall as The Shard and include an 11th-floor public garden. Some architects also oppose the new design, preferring the existing modernist structure. A vote on the project is scheduled for later today【CityAM】 What do we all think? Do we want to put this up there? https://lnkd.in/etM42Sbz

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁, 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 On behalf of Glenbrook, the proposal would provide 364 new apartments across a 44-storey building grounded in its urban and heritage context. At ground level, a dramatic triple-height, arched colonnade—a subtle nod to the architectural language of the listed viaducts and industrial heritage—provides a pedestrian route along Whitworth Street West. Newly landscaped public spaces will also enhance the streetscape and increase local biodiversity. “By opening up the site, we are creating vibrant public spaces and pathways that enhance connections across this part of the city. The building’s terracotta, high-performance façade references both the existing and historic context while introducing a distinctly modern addition to the evolving skyline of Manchester.” – Tony O'Brien, Sheppard Robson Partner. Think we did a feasibility study on this development 10+ years ago.
Throwback Thursday Telling you we can change the building without changing the building. The local landmark public house, the Fountain, needed a reboot. The overall scheme totals a mix of 45 open market and affordable apartments in two blocks, while still retaining a bar on the ground floor. A challenge we had never met before was the retention of the large glass domed cupola. Arrangements had to be made for the dome to be removed, refurbished and reinstated within the completed scheme. But after extensive efforts to retain the dome, it was decided that it had been badly maintained throughout its history, any further refurbishment was deemed too great an issue with the logistics of repair. Better land use, in our urban areas must be the way forward for the UK and we're happy to play our part. This was a brown field site. Say goodbye to the ordinary. #throwbackthursday #architecture #regeneration

An affordable housing-plus-library proposal by MASS Design Group and The Architectural Team (TAT) was recently selected for construction in Boston’s West End neighborhood. Here’s what you need to know: MASS Design Group and The Architectural Team were selected to design a 12-story mixed-use building in Boston's West End. The project includes 119 affordable housing units for households earning below 80% of the Area Median Income. A new 2-story public library, replacing the existing midcentury library, will be located at the building's base. Community spaces and outdoor areas are central to the design, and the site will feature walkways, trees, and a plaza The project is slated for completion in 2027. From St. Paul’s to the Skyscrapers: An Architect’s Journey Through London’s Vertical Evolution London has long been a city of architectural innovation, where tradition and modernity coexist in striking harmony. Reflecting on my journey as a young architect, I’ve often returned to the idea of elevation—both physical and conceptual. St. Paul’s Cathedral, built in 1710, set the tone for height in London, its dome symbolizing a spiritual aspiration to reach toward the heavens. Fast forward to today, the city’s skyline is a story of yearning verticality reaching higher and higher, each layer reflecting a shift in society’s ambitions and technologies. This drawing explores the unfolding route through London, linking landmarks such as the Millbank Tower, BT Tower, Tower 42, 1 Canada Square, and The Shard. Each structure represents a moment in time—an architectural chapter that pushed the boundaries of design and human endeavour. The future concept of stacking volumes could offer a lens to understand architecture not merely as construction but as a narrative of aspirations. How do we, as architects, continue to elevate our craft, not just in height but in meaning and impact? #ArchitectureJourney #LondonSkyline #ArchitecturalInnovation #StPaulsToTheShard #DesignEvolution #UrbanExploration #YoungArchitect #CityscapeNarrative #ElevatingArchitecture
