Skills that may save a life We have a few places left on the Mental Health First Aid Course that we are running in May 2024. With Mental Health First Aid you'll learn to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue. What’s unique about the MHFA course organised by MOE is that you’ll learn in a live online group setting with an experienced teacher. You’ll be able to bring your own case studies and practise in a safe container. You don't need to be a coach, counsellor or therapist to join this course, but you'll gain invaluable skills that may even save a life. Knowing what to do when someone you know might be living with depression or suicidal thoughts might give you the confidence to act before it is too late. Let's normalise talking about mental health. Let's educate ourselves how to talk to someone who may be struggling, and learn the appropriate language to talk about mental health. We have 7 people registered already, and 5 places left on the May course (and also places available on the August course). If you would like to attend, please visit https://lnkd.in/dUSiKPj7. Gifted places are available to those who are unemployed or on a low income.

MHFA can play an important role in early intervention. According to the MHFA curriculum, research suggests that people are more likely to seek help if someone close to them suggests it. As a Mental Health First Aider, this can be you. First Aiders are trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges. You know how to use the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to approach someone about what they’re facing and how to provide resources and encourage them to seek professional help for additional support. Early intervention can reduce a person’s stress and make their recovery easier. Long delays from the onset of symptoms to appropriate help can make mild symptoms worse and recovery more difficult. Mental Health First Aid helps you. #BeTheDifference by teaching how to recognize and intervene when early signs of mental health and substance use challenges emerge.

1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year. 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year. 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-14. (From the National Alliance on Mental Illness - NAMI) If we want to change these statistics, we need to do better with open dialogue and responding before the issue becomes a fatal disease. Center on Halsted is providing #MentalHealth #FirstAid virtual training on May 9th, which teaches you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to care. The course covers common signs and symptoms of mental illness and substance use, how to interact with a person in crisis, how to connect them with help, and how to care for yourself while caring for others.

Registration is free to anyone ages 18 and up. The course will be held virtually in two 3-hour sessions on Tuesday, January 23rd and Wednesday, January 24th from 9am-1pm. Just like CPR equips you to respond to physical emergencies, our Mental Health First Aid course provides you with the tools to recognize and respond to mental health crises. ✨ Empower yourself with a deeper understanding of mental health and increased empathy for those in need of support. The course won't make you a mental health expert, but it will guide you on how to address crises and connect people with the help they need. During the training, you'll learn how to: 🔍 Recognize signs, symptoms, and risk factors of mental health or substance use conditions. 💬 Choose the right words and actions to respond effectively. 🤝 Connect people with care and local resources. This course is designed for everyday individuals, whether they're strangers, friends, or family. It focuses on youth and young adult populations, with adult-focused trainings coming soon. Don't miss this opportunity to make a positive impact on mental health in our community. Visit the events section on our website to sign up now!

Do you know what to do in a case of a mental health emergency? What would you say to a person in a moment of crisis? I have to admit, I have experienced situations when someone in my life needed my support in the moment of crisis, and I didn't have the knowledge or tools to provide the support needed. One in five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness each year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10-34. Mental health crises can affect anyone at any time, often without warning. Knowing how to respond effectively in these situations can save lives. I am excited to share that I recently got certified in Mental Health First Aid (https://lnkd.in/eDuVu6kY). This training has equipped me with essential skills to assist individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. If you want to know how to help others in the moment of crisis or know how to provide support so that the situation doesn't get there, consider taking a Mental Health First Aid training. It’s a crucial step in fostering a supportive and responsive community for mental health.
