Over the weekend, I caught up with two of my friends who have recently started new roles in HR. As we chatted, something really struck me. For context, both of these friends are a joy to be around - kind, energetic, and full of positivity. And that’s not just my opinion; it’s a view shared by many who know them. Yet, despite that, neither of them feels a sense of belonging within their teams after several months at their companies. They feel left out of office chat, unwelcome at social events, and discouraged from bringing their authentic selves to work. Here’s the ironic part: they both work in HR. One works with a woman who literally has the word “inclusivity” in her job title, yet she’s made no effort whatsoever to help new starters feel included. It's easy to talk about the importance of inclusivity - especially on platforms like LinkedIn - but how much time and effort are we really investing in making it a reality? For me, this conversation was a wake-up call - I realised that I could be doing more for belonging and inclusion at my own workplace. Inclusive culture doesn’t happen by chance, and it’s not the automatic result of having “great company values” or a “nice” team. It’s an intentional choice - one we make with each interaction. And how’s this for timing… 💡 A study released yesterday (data from 6000 respondents across Australia) has shown that Equity is now a key driver for people deciding which employer has the best value proposition… It’s in the top 5 deciding factors, and it’s bumped “Strong Management” off the list completely. The top 5: ➡️Work life balance ➡️Salary & Benefits ➡️Job Security ➡️Development & training ➡️Equity* Equity is all about offering equal opportunities, regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity, etc. It's clear that to attract A Players in 2024, employers need to be able show action in this space. We’re at 140 RSVPs (!) so it really does show that not only is this front of mind, but people are doing something about it - continuing learning, prioritising action, and building connections with peers who also care 💪 Looking forward to Thursday next week! 🥂
