A post from Mr. Kofi Asare which makes a great sense. Don’t measure your children’s or family members’ successes by their graduating class - 1st class 2nd class 3rd class. Life is not determined by degrees. It is determined by what you learn along the journey of education and how you use that to transform yourself in whatever situation you find yourself. I hope this long post inspires you to see the positive side of your kids as many graduate from Universities and Colleges. GRADUATION GOALS VS CAREER AMBITIONS Mentee: Mr. Asare, i am graduating this week. I am grateful to you for all the support; but my GPA is not good. I feel I have disappointed you. Me: Oh how? What’s your class? Mentee: 2nd class lower. Me: Ahh, and you are disappointed? I am happy for you. Mentee: Are you sure? Me: of course, i am. Congrats! Mentee: I thought you were expecting me to get 1st Class Me: Yes, but not everyone can get 1st Class. Your best is what is required. With 2nd Class, you can progress to the master’s level. Me: I also had the same 2nd Class Lower at UCC during my bachelors. But I don’t think I have been useless twenty-two years after. The most important thing about education is how it impacts on your mind and society. Mentee: Really? I thought you had first class. Me: It would have been great, but I couldn’t. I was a B student, which is fine. But you can still be a B student in school and metamorphose into an A material in your career. That’s what I have always aimed at. That’s what you and all first class graduates must aim at now. Go out there and impact! Let’s all aspire to be first class in the world of work. Congrats to all graduands; and may all be great!

As Professor Maurice Phipps said in the movie Higher Learning, "One’s primary purpose at university level is to learn how to think." As Higher Education practitioners, this quote should resonate with all of us. It's not just about obtaining a degree, it's about developing critical thinking skills that will be valuable throughout life. Seeing the Decision Day posts of young people sharing their post-secondary plans is truly heartwarming. Whether it's a 4-year college, 2-year college, military, apprenticeship, or work plan, let's all offer our support, encouragement, and guidance. And if possible, let's also offer mentorship and financial support to help these young people achieve their goals. As we celebrate their achievements, let's also remember the importance of higher education and its role in shaping future generations. Let's continue to inspire and empower young minds to think critically and pursue their dreams.
