📣 Attention NABA Seattle Members!! 📣 Join UW for the 21st Annual Celebration of Black Alumni Achievement! The Celebration of Black Alumni Achievement (formerly Celebration of African American Alumni Achievement), was created by the late Dr. Thaddeus Spratlen, UW Foster Professor Emeritus of Marketing, to create a sense of community among Black alumni and students at the UW Foster School of Business. This celebration honors leaders within the Black community and raises funds to support the Association of Black Business Students (ABBS) Scholarship and African American Heritage Endowed MBA Scholarship. This is the only event at the Foster School specifically dedicated to raising funds for this critical need. While this event is geared towards UW Foster's Black alumni, students, faculty, staff and corporate partners, all who are committed to supporting and increasing racially diverse business and academic populations are welcomed. Business attire and comfortable shoes is highly recommended as this will be a networking atmosphere. However, limited seating will be provided throughout the room. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and a hosted bar will also be provided. For the average student, navigating the secondary and college admissions process is daunting.  For Black students in Chicago, it is exponentially more difficult.  But, LINK Unlimited Scholars is an intervening force that guides Black students to, through and beyond college. This month the Class of 2024 graduates! At LINK, preparation for college starts fast. For the past four years, these exceptionally talented youth have challenged themselves, dreamed of their futures, and grown into college bound adults.  As we’ve done for nearly 60 years, LINK has helped to prepare these Scholars with the education and resources needed to guide them to, through and beyond college. Through our proven Fellowship Program, Scholars receive the tools necessary to transform into Chicago’s future leaders.  But, none of this is possible without the support of philanthropy.  Will you help us in continuing to prepare our next generation of leaders? Representation matters! I have the privilege of serving as the advisor to Cleveland State University’s Black Student Union. This organization holds a special place in my heart because, during my undergraduate studies at CSU, I served as the President of this same organization. Affinity organizations, such as black student unions, are essential on campuses. They provide a sense of community and support for students who may feel isolated or marginalized. These organizations offer a space where students can connect with others who share similar experiences, challenges, and aspirations. Black student unions frequently advocate for the needs and concerns of black students on campus. They address important issues such as diversity, inclusion, racial equity, and social justice, and work to create a more welcoming and supportive environment for black students. These unions often organize events, discussions, and educational programs that celebrate black culture, history, and achievements. These activities can help raise awareness and promote an understanding of the experiences and contributions of black individuals and communities. Black student unions can provide opportunities for leadership development, mentorship, and networking, which can be particularly important for black students navigating a predominantly white academic and professional environment. Overall, black student unions play a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging, addressing systemic issues, and empowering black students to thrive academically, socially, and personally on campuses. #IamaproductofaBlackStudentUnionsupport

California is home to the fifth largest Black and African American population in the United States and a majority of Black undergraduates across the state attend community college. Despite this, California continues to systematically underinvest in Black students’ educational journeys when it comes to higher education funding, perpetuating economic inequity and contributing to a permanent underclass. In 2020, the Campaign for College Opportunity released the Follow the Money report, which referenced the funding disparities for Black students within California's higher education systems.   As the Campaign for College Opportunity states, underinvestment and a lack of support for Black students to both pursue and graduate with a college degree has been reinforced by a fundamentally discriminatory funding model and higher education structure that disadvantages Black Californians.   The state of California must provide equitable funding across its higher education systems with an explicit focus on closing racial equity gaps in lower-division courses. Yesterday, HMJ Consulting helped a student out with creating a Black History Month event at her high school. This event was called “Black History Month: Excellence & Education.” It was co-moderated by this student and myself. This event engaged in a conversation on black education and a celebration of black history month. This event informed students about the importance and history of Black American education and the spaces that have been cultivated within it. There were three panelists: Cory Williams, James Paul, and Freddie Hamilton. The topics of conversation included: knowing your purpose for going to college, how to make your college experience worthwhile, what the best way is for students to explore their futures, how the panelists’ organization serves the community, how the students can take advantage of those extracurricular activities, how to get more involved in their community, what local black history fact or story the panelists know of, and how the panelists weighs their standards of black excellence. This student is also starting a Black History Club and she invited the students to the interest meeting to check it out. Students were empowered with the inspiring message from the three panelists to believe in themselves and know they can work together to make the school community succeed. Students gained access by knowing what community organizations are out there and how the students can gain access to those organizations’ services. Students know how they can help transform their community in the school or outside of it by creating clubs they are passionate about and leading projects they know will benefit society. As students meet new mentors and work together, this will all be sustainable and successful in the long term. This is the call to action we gave at the end of the event.

My NEW research is on the brink of pioneering one of the most significant research studies in the field of education, focusing on the pivotal roles of Black Superintendents and their instrumental impact on dismantling systemic racism within our schools. This groundbreaking study, titled “The Unspoken Truth of the Black Superintendent in America: Examining the Impact Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Antiracism Efforts Have on the Lives of Black School Superintendents,” aims to shed light on the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of Black Superintendents in leading our educational institutions towards a more equitable and just future.
