Nadia Yanhol, PrEP coordinator for the regional #SoS 2.0 project team, highlighted the significant achievements of the Alliance for Public Health in implementing PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV) in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The conference was focusing on PrEP, given the many progress and changes that have occurred over the last two years. We are excited to share with you the results, innovations, and future plans that were presented at this important event. Over the past three years, the Alliance for Public Health has made significant progress: we have facilitated the introduction of PrEP in the Balkan region and the emergence of an innovative long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis method, Long PrEP (CAB-LA), in Ukraine, while also helping to increase the number of people using PrEP in Central Asia. The Alliance provides technical support to 13 countries in the region, and it is important for us to continue these achievements. We aim to sustain these results and bring new innovations across the entire region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Transitioning a Sustainable Health System in Gombe As CIHP transitions its role in Gombe State, we leave behind a legacy of excellence in strengthening comprehensive HIV care and treatment. Through CIHP’s steadfast efforts, Gombe has successfully attained epidemic control, surpassing the UNAIDS target of 95-95-95. This means over 95% of people living with HIV in Gombe know their status, are on treatment, and have achieved viral load suppression. Our multi-faceted approach, including the establishment of accessible ART centers and extensive mentoring programs, has empowered local healthcare workers and paved the way for sustainable healthcare system. This handover marks the beginning of a new chapter, with Gombe State positioned to continue this remarkable progress towards a healthier future for all. 🚨 Reversing STI Trends: The Power of Integrated SRHR Services 🚨 In May 2024, The International Planned Parenthood Federation’s International Medical Advisory Panel (IMAP) released a statement on person-centered care for STIs. This timely guidance offers comprehensive strategies to address the global rise in STIs, emphasizing integrated services, community involvement, and a rights-based approach. With an estimated 374 million new STI cases per year and a staggering 26% of new cases coming from Africa, it's time to rethink our strategies. The UN General Assembly is in full swing, marking a pivotal moment in the global fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR)! As part of #UNGA79, world leaders are gathering for the second High-Level Meeting on #AMR, a critical opportunity to address a threat that knows no borders. AMR impacts global health, food security, and our ability to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. We’re excited to share a recently published policy brief from USAID Global Health’s MTaPS program, “Addressing gaps in AMR awareness in the public". MTaPS is collaborating with school curricula policymakers to advocate for the integration of AMR education into primary and secondary school curricula—a proven strategy that builds on the previous success of HIV/AIDS education programs. Why does this matter? Low public awareness of AMR is a major barrier. Educating youth at an early stage can ignite lasting change, empowering communities with the knowledge to protect future generations from drug-resistant infections. Together, we’re working toward a healthier, more resilient future for all as AMR takes a global stage at the #UNGA. http://ow.ly/Tyh050K8Cew - Climate Crisis and Maintaining HIV and related care. We conducted a rapid response qualitative study to better understand climate-related disruptions to HIV, STI, and harm reduction services, and provide recommendations for policy action (L Moran, K Koester, S Joshi, W Steward, E Arnold CAPS/PRC) Natural disasters related to climate change are on the rise in California, but the impacts of climate-related events on healthcare delivery and client engagement in care are not well understood. The critical care needs of those receiving HIV, STI, and harm reduction services are of particular importance; disruptions to services pose an immediate threat to the continuity of care and client health. We conducted a rapid response qualitative study to better understand climate-related disruptions to services, document adaptive strategies, and provide recommendations for policy action.

Ending AIDS Epidemic as a public health threat in Ethiopia by 2030: Concerns on Regional Disparities My analysis of AIDS-related mortality in Ethiopia highlights significant regional disparities that threaten the goal of ending the epidemic by 2030. Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa are projected to have higher mortality rates, while SNNPR and Oromia show much lower rates. Gambella, despite having the highest HIV prevalence, is experiencing a decline, yet remains concerning. To achieve the 2030 target, we must focus on reducing new infections and AIDS-related deaths through targeted interventions in high-burden areas like Addis Ababa and Gambella. Without these efforts, Ethiopia may struggle to meet its goals, despite national progress. Data Source: Global Burden of Disease Collaborative Network. Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 (GBD 2021). COVID denial fueled a disturbing revival of AIDS denialism that could undermine public health. 🦠📰 The pandemic era has revived a dangerous movement: those who falsely argue HIV doesn't cause AIDS or that the virus doesn't exist at all. This fringe thinking threatens to sow confusion and mistrust just as public health prepares for the next crisis. After covid conspiracies spread online, influencers like Joe Rogan and Aaron Rodgers amplified long-debunked AIDS misinformation to millions. They regurgitated baseless claims that drugs, not HIV, sparked the AIDS crisis—rhetoric once confined to the fringes but now gaining momentum. Even presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr's book parrots these ideas to over a million readers. With slick marketing and little oversight, pseudoscientists are exploiting disinformation-friendly platforms to grow their "beehive" of doubters. Their impact could jeopardize research funding, discourage testing, and deter treatment—putting lives at risk by politicizing a deadly virus like covid denial did. As trust in experts erodes, the revival of AIDS denialism signals a wider assault on established science and medicine. #AIDSFacts #ScienceDenialism #PublicHealth

Every day, the healthcare providers at Centres GHESKIO exemplify resilience and hope. In the face of severe violence and unrest in Haiti, they remain steadfast in their commitment to providing free and high-quality HIV care for over 10,000 patients in and around Port-au-Prince. Our study, recently published in The Lancet Regional Health - Americas, describes some of their extraordinary work, guided by the wisdom of Dr. Bill Pape: "We create hope when there is no hope."
