Plans have been approved for a £15m redevelopment of Sheppey Leisure Centre in Beachfields, Isle of Sheppey. The project will result in a significant expansion of the existing facility, with the existing gym facilities being expanded and refurbished and a new cafe added. The power-assisted fitness equipment, by Innerva, will be moved across from the current pool building, uniting all dry-side facilities and providing all gym users with ready access to the range of facilities. There will also be a new adventure play area and tag active. Sheppey Matters, an award-winning health and well-being charity based in the Sheppey Healthy Living Centre, will have a purpose-built space to help them continue providing their valuable and important services to locals. The project is a key component of the council’s £20 million Sheerness Revival programme – funded by the UK Government and Swale Borough Council has appointed Alliance Leisure to manage the flagship project. An update on our leisure services 🔈 We've appointed national leisure services provider GLL, the charitable social enterprise behind Better, to run Blaydon, Dunston and Heworth leisure centres, as well as Gateshead International Stadium. As part of the competitive tender process, GLL have set out their plans to improve the experience of leisure centre visitors by updating gym equipment, swimming pools, technology and more. They'll also continue to work with the groups that currently use the facilities on a regular basis, including Gateshead Football Club. The change will take effect from 1 April 2025, but our leisure centres and stadium will be open in the meantime.

Latest leisure and events news…..   This month the first phase of restoration work will start at Moseley Road Baths in Birmingham. The Grade II listed building works will start with the roof and façade. Phase two will see the restoration of the swimming pool and the conversion of the second pool into an event space.   The Post Office has announced that it will be increasing the cost of first-class post to £1.65 from 7 October (a 30-pence increase). The organisation has said that reduced volumes of post and increased business costs have led to the increase. Second class post will remain at 85-pence. News publisher The Times has said that 9,500 millionaires are likely to leave the UK due to their fears of higher earner taxes increasing in the next budget. Archaeologists have uncovered a 2,000-year-old mosaic featuring dolphins and fish at Wroxeter near Telford. Some small artifacts have also been found. September is a great month for sport in the region. The Strongman Open took place yesterday and the Vitality Blast Finals takes place at Edgbaston next weekend. The FISE Xperience Series is also taking part in Wolverhampton next weekend. Birmingham is now positioned as 31 in the Ranking of Sports Cities. 80% of people are planning to spend the same or more on their holidays in the year ahead according to a Travel Counsellors Censuswide survey. 17% of respondents stated that they would like to travel around at their destination. 43% of people said ‘guaranteed sunshine’ helped make the perfect holiday. Clacton Leisure Centre is set to be redeveloped and transformed into a new Active Wellbeing Centre. Tendring District Council (TDC), which owns the centre, has entered into a new Community Regeneration Partnership with the central government after the authority was awarded £19.7million by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to help regenerate Clacton and Jaywick Sands. The council’s Cabinet is now set to approve a list of projects, which – in addition to the leisure centre work – also a £2.5million scheme to expand the Tudor Fields to Jaywick Sands walking and cycling route. Today a coalition of more than 200 bodies, athletes, businesses and charities across health, sport, recreation, and physical activity are calling on party leaders to #TakeTheLead and commit to making the UK the most active nation in Europe. Swimmer Becky Adlington, Rugby’s Ugo Monye, skeleton’s Amy Williams and dance legend Darcey Bussell are among the stars and organisations who have signed an open letter to leaders, kickstarting the #TakeTheLead campaign: which demonstrates the importance of creating a more active nation and, crucially, the urgent need and unique opportunity for leaders to unlock our sector in a move that could be transformative to communities across the UK. Participation in sport and physical activity matters. A lot. It unites our nation, binds our communities together, and makes us healthier, happier, more productive and more prosperous. And every year it saves the NHS £9.5bn by preventing illness and in generates £85bn in economic and social value. But it could do so much more. We need our next political leaders to take their inspiration from our leaders across sport, recreation and physical activity – to step up and make it happen. Am I alone in being annoyed by misadvertising by Estate Agents/Landlords, we expect a little poetic licence but a whole missing property? Recently we went to view a property that was advertised as having a shop front space, an office, kitchen, bathroom, cellar & enclosed courtyard garden. Ideal for our needs, so viewed it. It was nothing like advertised. There was no office,kitchen or bathroom or courtyard. ALL there was was a TINY shop area & a wet cellar. The shop space was minute. took us all of 30 seconds to view it. A wasted 90 minute round trip, wasted fuel, time of the tenant Please Estate Agents & Landlords dont offer places that are nothing like that which is advertised. The search goes on! Any Landlords with retail properties to let give us a PM. #DSSC,#Charity, #Landlords, #Advertising.#RetailtoLet How they are going to rent out a property with no bathroom facilities or kitchen area...the Landlord made the rest into a studio flat.

We're proud to join with our friends from across sport and health to support the #TakeTheLead campaign. Too many women and girls are missing out disproportionately on the joy, fulfilment and lifelong benefits of sport throughout their lives.  The result of this can be seen in the staggering physical and mental health inequalities that women face. 👉90% of those hospitalised with eating disorders are female 👉Self-harm is five times more likely in young women 👉Two million women in England and Wales have osteoporosis 👉Half of women over 50 will break a bone because of this disease, compared to 20% of men. The cumulative impact of this on the NHS and on the economy should be obvious to any government. The next government must step up and recognise the value and importance of sport to women and girls. It must recognise the value of women’s sport to society. It must be ready to play its part in closing the gender play gap and making the UK a more active nation.

The Community Sport Facilities Program provides financial support for not-for-profit sport, recreation, and community organisations in the ACT.
